Among all the iffy planned additions coming up for minecraft, (villager trading, desert temples) something posted on MC Forums today piqued my interest: The announcement of tripwires as an addition to minecraft. Imo this seems like a really awesome addition. I'm just curious of what the rest of you think, and what kinda cool contraptions would you guys wanna make with this in conjunction with btw, especially regarding smp. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I think this would be a rather cool addition to vMC, as long as it would be possible to conceal. In BTW though, lenses already serve this purpose. But it would be a whole heck of a lot better as a trap activation method than a pressure plate.

Well think of the trip wire as a much more low tech version of that lens functionality. The trip wire will only extend something like 12 blocks while the lens goes much further, and the lens can do far more things. The trip wire, though, will allow for a more intuitive and (hopefully) more concealed way for people to set up traps to protect their base in the early game, when they don't have access to the lens.

What if you set up BUD switchs (?) next to each string? Then you have a 100% trap.

Also Lens+detector block is really expensive setup, while tripwire will be cheap and expendable.

Does anyone know their durability? If they don't tear up or something when activated, they will be a replacement for long-range signal transmitting. Which is also weird.

There hasn't been much information given about them. All we know for certain is that there's a 19-block limit and that it trips when someone steps on it or breaks it without using shears. We'll know more tomorrow when the snapshot comes out.

19 block limit? Did they give any reasoning for that? I can't really think of a reason other than an attempt at balance, in which case, I'd think that they would choose a more round number

I just wish there was a way to detonate explosives faster :P The fuse burning sound gives it away with plenty of time to run....

Pshh explosives. Pistons to pull the floor away so they fall to their death is much more fun, and faster acting.

Yeah, you just block all of the blocks around a bed the guy will respawn at, except for one or two which you retract with a piston every now and then and drop him into a lava pit. He'll just keep respawning and dying. Unless you build it out of snow or something...

So it seems in the current snapshot, tripwires wont break when walked over so they'll continue triggering until theyre physically broken by a player, or blown up by a creeper i guess. awesome.

Actually, if you break them with anything but shears, you'll set off the redstone. Just something else to add to the thief's kit, I guess.

Now if only we had like extendable/retractable spikes that we could hook up to the tripwire. It could hit the enemies weak point for massive damage.
