I didn't know that instrument could be epic!

Post by RaustBlackDragon »

I'm a big fan of music that takes an instrument that's pretty much considered precluded from being awesome, and doing awesome things with it.

Shipping up to Boston does this with a banjo and an accordion. An ACCORDION.

Then there's pseudolonewolf, who does the most amazing things with those terrible midi instruments that are used whenever you play a midi file in your browser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0zs0mQPT5o

Anybody else like songs that do this? If so, post your favorite!

Dude I love that song. I've always liked Dropkick Murphys, but I hadn't heard that song until I watched the movie 'The Departed.' Such a good flick.

Also, contributin' in the form of people who use guitars in unique ways. Dunno if that's exactly what you had in mind, but I feel like sharing these amazing artists

Sungha Jung (playing Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved) - He's awesome because he takes the melody/percussion of the entire song including the vocals and creates a solo guitar piece.

Igor Presnyakov (playing Poker Face) - Similar to the above. They take shitty songs and make them awesome.

Justin King playing an original piece called Knock on Wood - This guy has the most unique style I've ever seen. The only other artist I've seen do something similar is Kaki King, but they are still so different.

Rodrigo Y Gabriela playing Diablo Rojo - These two are an amazing duo. They sort of combine modern guitar styles with flamenco and the result is great

And, while not guitar, this guy is pretty awesome:

That wasn't QUITE what I had in mind, but those songs are so awesome that whether or not they're relevant is irrelevant :)

Well I'm glad you liked them. In the spirit of sharing good music, here's some more like those:

Antoine Dufour playing a cover of Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap. Before you listen to this one, make sure you hear the original song first, as it helps you appreciate just how much work might've gone into creating this piece.

Walk of the Earth playing Somebody that I used to Know by Gotye (I think). This whole band plays a single guitar. Pretty neat stuff.

This one, I'm not sure who its by, but god is he amazing at the drums. I love minimalist drum kits, as they force you to be inventive with your style. EDIT: Make sure you watch in 480p, there's a huge difference in sound quality.

This guy, John Gomm, even uses the tuners to create unique sounds with his guitar. Pretty awesome IMO.

How about a robot cello playing Marilyn Manson? (Also, a singing scanner.)

Edit: Even better, here's a guy playing a tree!

(Be sure to check out his other videos, especially if you like the John Gomm video.)

I play in an accordion orchestra. Yes, such a thing exists. :P

You're lucky that I don't play accordion myself or I might be offended. ;)

Oh no, I'm not saying it sucks, I'm just saying I never thought it could be used in actiony-epic music successfully.

You should listen to pirate songs, then.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
