A strange creeper explosion

Just now i respawned and unluckily faced straight into a creeper. He walked right up to me, and in frustration, I to him, but the explosion only did 1 single heart of damage. I was directly inside the creeper when it happened, which is very confusing because thats like being inside an exploding stick of C4. I doubt this is a bug, but I post here none the less. Does anyone have an explanation?

Did the explosion happen while either you or the creeper were standing on a half slab? I've had strange should-have-died moments, and I believe the way MC calculates damage when half slabs are involved is the culprit.

I've experienced a similar thing. I couldn't get it consistently enough to report so I just brushed it off but it may be a thing?

EDIT: Just tested this. Can someone confirm by making a creeper explode while it's stood in tall grass? I only took half a heart of damage. Also works if you are "shielded" by a tall grass block..

Nah, i dont think tall grass saves you from explosions, could be wrong though.

This has happened to me several times... Specifically, it seems to happen most often when I get pissed off for some reason and decide to suicide. So I go hug a creeper, staying right on his face, touching him, and boom, almost no damage... Almost as if the universe is saying "you wanna die? fuck you, I won't make it so easy to you".

Its most likely just vanilla strangeness. Nothing you can do about it.

A wide rumored bug is that "hugging" a creeper negates damage. I have also seen this to be true in some cases. Also another type of negation happens when you jump when the creeper explodes. But really things like this are hard to test consistently..

I was not standing on a half slab, the world had already loaded fully and there was no lag, but I probably was in tall grass with him. Both times were on grass blocks so there could have been tall grass involved.

Apparently all creepers want really is hugs :) Cause it only hurts a little...

This sounded interesting enough to test it. So I loaded up a creative world and spammed grass everywhere. My findings:

All tests were point blank, shots to the face.

• Both you and creeper in grass. Half heart of damage.
• Creeper in grass, you are not. Half heart damage.
• You are in grass, creeper is not. Three hearts of damage.
• (Control)Both you and creeper not in grass. Death, as to be expected.

Tested on other blocks of similar opaqueness. The top holds true for:

• Snow
• Mushrooms
• Hemp/Wheat
• Pumpkins/Melons
• Carrots/Potatoes
• Sugar Cane
• Torches/Redstone Torches
• Redstone/String
• Switches
• Flour/Clay

Stopped testing. I'm sure anything else I try will behave the same.

Exploit tested.
You can effectively neutralize(except half heart) creeper damage with bone meal, though only applicable on grass blocks. Shears are best, to avoid the aftermath crater.


Tested my post about half slabs using the previous test criteria.

• Both you and creeper on a slab. Half heart of damage.
• Creeper on slab, you are not. Half heart damage.
• You are on slab, creeper is not. Three hearts of damage.
• (Control)Both you and creeper not on a slab. Death, as to be expected.

The extra thing to keep note for slabs. Is it also negates all aftermath damage except for the slab it was standing on.

Yes. One that is exploity as hell and heavily devalues shears as a gameplay element. Seriously, I never, EVER, leave my base without a pair of shears to clip creepers. It has saved my life so many times, and this would take away from that, not to mention it utilizes what is impossible to deny is a bug.

This is a vanilla bug. Not a BTW bug. I've seen it happen because my friends 3 year old plays minecraft and he'll run at the creepers and take 1/2 heart damage while his dad who is playing with him will try to kill the creeper and end up dying. In addition to seeing it happen I've also experienced it on vanilla servers and a couple times on by BTW world. So yeah. It's weird. Not sure what it has to do with bonemeal and grass and all that because I haven't tested it that extensively. I just wanted to keep FC from ripping into the code looking for what is causing it when it's a vanilla bug.

PS I realize this post is somewhat poorly written and rambles some but I'm on large quantities of cold medicine at the moment.
