Well, not that bad if it's done in a reasonable manner. The game maintains a player list, so if this is only targeting players, there's no reason to not just scan through that (I do that with the mod's modified beacons), and do a quick distance squared check.

Granted, it's not a given that Mojang will realize that and not perform instanceof checks on every single entity in that radius to see if it's a player, and I've seen them do stuff like that in the code before (like with beacons).

Even if they did the reverse and scanned around the player for zombies and then switched them on, that is still a massive volume to be checking on a regular basis.
Since the loading range around the player is 11x11 chunks and therefore 176x176 blocks, I think zombies don't scan anymore, but simply calculate the path to the player as soon as they're loaded.
Could be a performance improvement depending on how effective their path finding algorithm is (I wonder how this effects FC's changes, since they have to scan for passive mobs).
I haven't played that much on the current BTW early game, so I can't judge the difficulty increase of that, but I kinda liked that fact, that you could sneak around zombies, when you spot them in the distance and aren't properly equipped to handle them with ease.
Also might be weird that zombies head straight for you and pass creepers and other mobs who still completely ignore you.

I'll try it out in play, but I'm not convinced. Given the way other mobs work, I suspect this will feel just as artificial as the other changes. I also sincerely doubt they'll be performing line of sight checks and such (that would definitely get expensive), so the way it sounds to me is just like zombies will be homing in on you from all over the map for no good reason.

So yeah, whatever...I'll make whatever changes are appropriate like usual.

I'm guessing it's supposed to be some sort of equivlent to mobs with armor and to bring some importance to the bane of arthopods spell. Oh and more "Difficulty". Most of what he's doing seems to be exactly what map makers do; alter the stats of the mob and nothing else. Feels weird that spiders will spawn with what was only accessable to steve via brewing. I get that he want's more difficulty in the game but this is just doing it wrong in far too many ways. Artificial should sum up how I feel about the mobs by this point.

I'm curious as to whether the potion effects last indefinantly/for a long time or for the normal potion time. On the one hand, if they don't last for very long it is unlikely that steve will actually encounter a spider with an active status effect unless he is wandering around, spawning new spiders. On the other hand, if the effect does last long enough for the player to encounter it then it will feel even more strange considering the player himself cannot brew potions of such strength.

Off Topic, but you should really check out the Infernal Mobs mod sometime.

Saying something is off-topic doesn't make it somehow better.

When I saw that video of zombies aggroing from off the screen, I started picturing many ridiculous things happening, like zombies periodically walking out of distant caves throughout the day to all burn and die in the same spot. Curious to see if that actually happens, I grabbed the snapshot to test it out. My observations after two days and nights:

Zombies do require line of sight. At one point, I saw a distant zombie's feet under a tree. It felt rather like aggroing an Enderman, as when I stepped to the side far enough to see its head it instantly turned around and had its eyes on me.

I saw no zombies hiding under trees on day 2 even though I spent the night running around the forest. My guess is that since I aggroed them all overnight, they all burned during the day.

They DO target Villagers from this distance. You can guess what implications this has on the method they're using to search for targets...

Invisible spiders! What amazing additions will Mojang bring us next? (sarcasm)

Anyways, honestly, aside from the status effects being applied to spiders and the resource pack system, snapshot 13w24a looks pretty bland, as the zombie aggro distance thing was actually added in snapshot 13w23b.

Relax guy I got this! Carpets can be placed on anything including water sources! Carpets, yeah! That should jazz up the bland snapshot.

Carpets...sigh. Why the fuck people don't just use wool blocks for the same effect, I have no clue, but sure...let's put in a substitute for an already underutilized block as a new feature...

Would be really cool if Mojang played their own game and thus could discern when the suggestions they receive are irrelevant given the existing feature set.

If visually there was any difference between carpet and wool, I'd understand it - it's not like it can go under chests, so it looks more like a rug anyways.

Replace the rather bland coloring with some...carpet designs, it'd be a valid feature.

Yeah, maybe I'll do something along those lines. If I throw in an auto retexture on the corners similar to what I do for table legs already, it might be kinda worthwhile.

On the other hand, I'm tempted to just overwrite them with other functionality entirely. Will think on it.

actually carpets have they uses in floor making where you don't want to ruin the ceiling of the room below and still want to have some eye candy floor above.
the same can be achieved by going with a 2 blocks ceiling tough

@eternal8phoenix: no worries. wasn't angry, just was explaining my self. when i made that post i hadn't applied to a server yet. now i have and have been excepted.

On topic: New snapshot 13W25a, looks like it's mainly fixing bugs, caused by fixing other bugs caused by the new resource pack system... this doesn't bode well.

While they do like creating new issues, focusing on bug fixing is nice.

Actually, it's really good news as bugfix snapshots often means the next patch is considered feature-complete!

No more new features yaaaaay.

Unfortunately, that also means a new update soon. Which means FC is gonna have to endear cries for updates right after updating the mod to 1.5.2. Also, how does things look with the new launcher? Will it work with mods fine?

I've got it running the latest BTW. Modloader for 1.5 has some problems with it, but I wouldn't worry too much about that.

I wouldn't call feature complete on this one yet. Dinnerbone was saying it would be 13w24c before he realized it was already week 25. https://twitter.com/Dinnerbone/status/3 ... 2865428480
