It's really not tough man. General tutorials step-by-step you through making new items, blocks, and recipes. So designing a new axe made from flint and sticks should be very simple. Little to no java experience required. The very first mod I ever wrote was 3 flint making a spearhead, and then 2 sticks and the spearhead making a spear. Took me a whole hour. I had never modded before.
