If you're using a hopper anyway, you could just fill all slots except one with clay balls, then the hopper will emit a redstone signal as soon as the first poop drops into it. I had a similar setup for a while but I was having problems with torch burnouts and changed to something else. I'd upload how to do it but I'm not feeling good at all.

I'll be honest I can't really see a scythe fitting in with the mod. It really wouldn't add much functionality to what we've already got, and I honestly think there's enough things that clutter our inventories/tool bars.

You can actually do the same style using the platforms in place of the fences and still have a movable gate. While it isn't quite as fun as fences, it still servers the same purpose :)
