4.AFFFFFFF - Animageddon Spoiler Thread

Post by FlowerChild »

There is a rather major set of changes packed into the latest release, so I just wanted to set up a spoiler thread so that folks would have a place to discuss them openly right from the get go.

Have fun :)

goodbye :(

From what i can tell, all animals need grass to munch on to survive now. I had a small pen with pigs in it and after they ate what little grass was in there, they started dying. So far i only witnessed the babies dying but im sure the adults will be next.

Well played, fc.

Speculation based on not having played this release yet:

I suspect one consequence of this is that my strategy of "saving" one or two breeding pairs of animals in holes near my base for when I get the materials to breed them won't work anymore... maybe I will choose to build my first base decently far away from original spawn so I can save the animal resources for when I have more tech.

-Animals become visibly skinny with ribs showing and eyes reddening after not eating for less than a day (how weak of them)

-Pigs and chickens will leave loose dirt blocks when they eat grass
-Cows and sheep are grazers, so they'll leave the original dirt type

I built a well lit 13x13 pen and dropped in a cow. After about a game week the cow had eaten all the grass and was well into skin-and-bones stage. I'll await further developments but seems animal farming now requires automation.

Does "well lit" mean "lit by the sky"? As of 4.A2 Timing Rodent, grass only regrows when exposed to natural light.

Two sheep in a 13x9 pen (that's the interior dimensions; thanks to FC for survey stakes ;) ) cleared out most of the grass within about 3-4 in-game days. All but four of the interior blocks are definitely in sunlight, and those four have glowstone blocks hovering above 'em (to keep monsters from spawning). The perimeter is a wood fence sitting on grass blocks, which replenishes the interior grass. I started feeding them hay after the first day though (erratically). They're now hooked up with a pair of dispensers that feed them wheat on the same cycle as the wolf feeder (uses item decay as a timer), but they're still clearing the pen and are always ready to eat an extra 2-3 wheat each..

My chickens are rather alarming as well - the two chicks died pretty much overnight even though they'd been fed in the day (adults survived and didn't seem to be starving, although they ate quite a bit). I ran some consumption rate tests (b version however), and the four adult chickens that I have ate 20 wheat seeds (5/ea) in the evening after being fully fed in the morning, and in a repeat test later on, 36 chicken feeds (9/ea). Not sure if that's an actual difference as my timing was less than exact (the end of the chicken feed test happened while it was raining so I had to guess at the time). That's alarming as it's burning through my seed reserves, which took a while to build up from about ~160 farming plots.

I could totally automate my way around the consumption rate in terms of food delivery (my classical chicken farm was designed before the morning egg-laying change and could be adapted somewhat for other animals), but I'm not sure I can produce enough food to keep 'em fed.

Just a heads up that I think you guys may be severely underestimating the magnitude of these changes, and may still be thinking in very vanilla terms out of habit. To give you a sense of things:

Are the animals hidden from us, or do I see (or better not see) another reason to be even more worried?
If I may ask.

No kidding, man :)

Is animal automation going to be a thing anymore? Most automated farm systems tend to be kinda limited in scope (or semi-automatic at best), and I'm not sure it's going to be practical to have farm-fed animals etc...?

Don't forget there's a limited draw distance for critters and monsters. They could very well just be beyond that. Personally, I'm more concerned about what looks like ghasts in the lower left corner :)

Open-air area surrounded by loose cobblestone walls 2x high topped by oak slabs. Torch in each corner and one in the middle. During the game week there was no rain. That would obviously accelerate the animageddon for the test subject.
