Hm, that doesn't really help. Getting bored of not being able to progress, can someone please just tell me?

You have to keep at it in one location for an extended period (a fire plough is just a slightly more advanced "rubbing two sticks together), and you need to craft a campfire to use it on.

after you strip the bark from a tree if you use a pointy-stick on the 1st layer of vascular tissue of the tree you get another stick at the cost of 0.5 durability of your pointy-stick

Eventually I died because I decided to stay in a forest that was filled with wolves and one found me while I was punching tree down on the edge of starvation to get enough wood for a 3rd night campfire. I don't think I would have had the energy to dig into another hill anyway had I left the forest, presuming I found the end and not a jungle instead. Not sure what to make of the whole process. I was only able to find food because a cow fell from a cliff and I got 3 raw beef but I only managed to cook one, total RNG gods there.

Perhaps I should NOT have made campfire first night and saved the wood and idled in a dark hole.
Not sure if i'm feeding my campfire efficiently. My first playthrough I dumped tons of wood fuel in and was pushed into a condition where I could not have survived. I tried to feed the first slowly but I never found myself building a surplus of wood and I would leave my hole every day with not a single unit of timber in my inventory.

Do you just have to get lucky or is there something I'm missing because I feel pushed to the absolute margin of privation now and yes I dirt-slab everything incline; I think i jumped twice in the last playthrough, once by accident.

One mistake I'm sure I made:

Instead of wandering from tree to tree I should have just focused on a single tree so it's leaves would auto-decay and I might get some free timber.

I'm not entirely certain, but from the first spoiler you posted above I get the impression you're missing the following rather crucial bit that's making your existence a living hell:

Because there's no earthly reason to be THAT concerned about overall stick efficiency :)

Is there no way early game to craft a wooden fence (and gate) or a trapdoor? Have tried many combinations of sticks and strings and whatnot, and seems a bit odd that you can craft a door but not a trapdoor. Feels like I'm missing something obvious

I'm pre-saw stage so the best I have is the iron axe.

That ability has not been a thing for several releases and a few years. You can do so after a saw.

Is there a UI for the brick oven? I thought I saw someone on a stream open one, but I've finally managed to build a brick oven, and I can't seem to get it to open no matter how I click on it.

Any hints on how to harvest sandstone? The sand-to-sandstone recipe was removed, sandstone crumbles when mined now, and the chisel doesn't work neither. I'm worried my sandstone desert base is no longer going to progress! Would a better quality tool (for example a diamond or steel pickaxe) do the job?

It uses the same method as smoothstone.

Unfortunately it takes a very long time to obtain sandstone. I don't think I will be able to continue with my desert settlement :(

You have to isolate the block you want from the rest of its kind before extracting it using the iron chisel.

In the early game it's definitely slow. Once you're more established, you can manipulate the world to make it easier and handle larger volumes.

Now I see it, the new recipe does make sense and therefore easy to remember for next time.

I was indeed thinking along the same lines as the item frame that surrounds the leather with sticks/moulding as well, so it feels a teeny weeny bit inconsistent.

Due to some help from here, as well as from browsing other threads, I've gotten up to iron tools and am living somewhat sustainably waiting for hemp to grow. However, I can't seem to construct a hand crank because I need regular cobblestone, instead of loose cobblestone.

I haven't found more clay nearby (I need to do some more searching), but it looked from the hints

that regular cobble could be constructed by putting clay on a loose cobble block placed in the world. Is that block then harvestable to use to make a hand crank?

Hand crank doesn't have cobblestone in its recipe, neither does anything else.

Every recipe (I think) that used to require cobblestone now requires either smooth stone or rocks
