Version 4.AAAAAAAAAAHHHH Hints/Help Request (MILD SPOILERS)

The latest release has a lot of new things to discover, and I'd like to leave the information provided to players to a minimum to give them a chance to experience it for themselves.

I'm creating this thread though in case anyone gets stuck and need a little extra info. Some general hints below in spoiler boxes, for portions I think might be particularly sticky, so you can open them as appropriate.

First, a couple of general non-spoilery tips:

-Try combining each of the materials you gain access to early on in the crafting grid. There are a lot of new things to craft.
-For later game crafting recipes, smoothstone has replaced cobblestone in almost all cases.

Very early game / first tools:

-Tying one ingredient to another may be a useful crafting technique.

A little later on when you might be wondering how to proceed:

-An oven may not be the only way to harden brick.

Once you start smelting some iron:

-If you manage to make a simple iron tool, try using it on a tree stump.

-Isolating some blocks from their neighbors may allow you to harvest them intact, if you have the right tools.

I just want to roast some food lol. I discovered some reed interest but it has not yielded anything substantial.

The fire stuff is nice.

Isolating a stone is still anathema.

Does anyone have any tips for how to modify the world around me sufficiently to create shelter? I can get a fire going but that's not much help when I'm totally exposed in the great outdoors come nightfall

I got enough dirt to build walls and then kind of spiraled down into the dirt. If you get lucky a spider will join you and you can poke it to death.

Other than that I have been able to get into some hill sides but you pretty much always have to be looking for places.

How does one cook food once one has fire? I tried throwing and right clicking and left clicking, no more fire after left clicking... :(

How would you cook food on a campfire in real life? You wouldn't just toss a steak directly into the flames - you'd roast it on a pointy stick.

I know last night in the live stream you mentioned the smoke as an indicator for cooking. But no matter how long the food is there it never seems to fully cook.

They do cook sometimes, it just seems to take a long while.

I got a shovel that way too. As far as food goes I've only been able to cook 2 things and the process was random as far as I could tell.

So, did you or did you not succeed in crafting a shovel? Because I do have the something to tie with, just no clue what to tie to get the shovel.

I've made a fire plough, but it doesn't seem to work anywhere and just slowly destroys itself when I right click anything with them. Any hints on the conditions required?
