Stop using lava blades D:

Post by grimper12341 »

I have no idea why people are still using them when we have saws <3

This saw trap kills *everything*, including those pesky spy chickens and every Mo' Creatures mob including ogres (provided their strength is on low in the config), and you don't lose a single drop.

Here's the trap with glass removed so you can see it easier:

And here it is with glass back and the water flowing to clear out the drops:

Those pistons controlling the water flow are controlled by a clock. Reason why I don't have water flowing all the time is because the saws kill faster when mobs arn't bouncing up and down in water. For best results, use a slow clock and have it attached to a pulse generator, so that the water is only flowing for a minimal amount of time.

The only flaw with this design is that chickens can land in the gaps between the saws, but they get pushed or walk back onto them soon enough.
Also if you power the saws from the sides instead of underneath, items will get stuck in the axles.

And unfortunately there's no pretty textures because MCForge 1.0.6 is incompatible with MCPatcher :(

Well, I do have reasons for still using lava blades or at least excuses. ;)

For one my trap was the first thing I ever build ( I don't count holes to hide in) and because of that it's pre-BTW.

I didn't change it because of nostalgia mostly but also because I deem it unnessecary. If done right a lava blade doesn't destroy any drops. Ok, there's the chickens but my trap spits out a wolf for every 10 or so chickens so why change things?

Oh, and of course lava is easier to come by than saws.

Ok ok, if I ever go to the trouble of building another trap, I'll use saws. Satisfied? :P

I prefer having the wall-o-saws vertical as opposed to horizontal, with panels/omnislabs above them (on the offchance a larger than 2x1 mob randomly appears), that way there's no need for pistons manipulating the water current.

Lava blades are still useful for pigs though. Or they would be for me, but I caved and am using spawnerGUI for my mob trap now...zombie pigmen are just too efficient.

Mind showing how to do a vertical saw trap?

Water flow into a 2x2 wall of saws, with hoppers below. I personally have signs holding the last two blocks of water before the saws up, and a perpendicular flow that sends them to 4 hoppers with chests, with filters that sort it by drops (gunpowder, string, feathers, and bones/arrows).

I will continue to use lava blades for as long as it works, as it allows me to get an unlimited supply of cooked pork, and with 1.8, cooked beef and chicken.

So, until they are patched I will continue to use lava blades !!!

Well its not that different between cooked pork chops and raw ones once you throw them into a cauldron and cook them so i don't really see the point of this debate :P b

Anyways why not do what i do and mix both lava and saws together that way everything dies just that much quicker.

Well I built my first mob tower using saws, and I love it. I just put two/three saws right next to each other, like this:

[][][]
S-S-S
XXXX

The three saws kill everything, and there are blocks where the [] is, so chickens couldn't escape if I ported the design to a passive mob tower.

Seriously, check the configuration of my grinder in my factory-farm video.

Chickens don't escape that either (as demonstrated).

Yeah, FC, I saw that configuration. I absolutely love it, and I use it myself. It's pretty easy to implement

Here's how I did a vertical one. Drops pass under the blades, no need to use the water piston thingy.

hmm seeing what you guys are doing.. do you absolutly need 2x2 saws to acheive it? cause im using a 2 wide saw setup by one high and i just can.t kill the damned creepers.. they are like immune below the belt..

wwwwS
DDDDw

were w is water D is dirt (or anything flooring really and the water below the saw is the loot channel, atm its killing spiders and skelies just fine.. but creepers just won't die

a 6x6 spawning pad (obviously more than one) and on the corners of a 4x4 square, add half slabs, hope that makes sense

so byt 6x6 spawning pad.. looks interesting idea, and you get a hole in the middle to get the mobs out? and fall into what ever system youre using?

I think walker_boh_65 means something like this:

Mobs can spawn on the 's' blocks, but not on the 'h' halfblocks above them, so there is little room for spiders to spawn, mobs then fall off each side into water channels or drop shafts:

Although I would have though that this would reduce the chances even more.

spiders need a 3x3 spawning space, so they could spawn at all in the first one

Ah, I did not know this, I hadn't seen anything that mentions it before, but then, spider spawning doesn't bother me too much, so haven't tried to exclude them from a mob trap before.

The top 2 can be replaced by panels if you want to save on space - a full block can prevent mobs toucing the saw blade, but a half block is fine.
