Old survival/crafting games

Post by Gilberreke »

I pretty much thought that the whole survivalcraft deal was new, but I've been alerted to the presence of a few old games that basically have the same mechanic. I'll try to post everything older than Minecraft here in this thread, for reference.

UnReal World
First one I got thanks to Kaitocain. It's a little like a roguelike Minecraft/Dwarf Fortress Hybrid. First release was in '92, though the typical survivalcraft only came about later.

Survival Kids
Apparently I had this lying around the apartment, go figure. My girlfriend showed it to me. Released in 1999 for Gameboy Color, it's a rather typically Japanese RPG, but with heavy reliance on survivalcraft. Seems to have an elegant stat system like most JRPGs of the type. Stats are Health, Hunger, Water, Fatigue. There's a follow-up series for DS, called Lost In Blue (again thanks to Kaitocain).

Got any more? Share the loot!

Seems to be some more here: http://indiestatik.com/2013/11/13/survival-games/
I'll go through the list for you guys

I played a lot of Lost in Blue. Never got around to finishing it but I remember it being a lot of fun. It had nice progression to it where you slowly explored further to advance your technology and the story. There's a Lost in Blue 3 as well.

There's a Wii version too, not sure if that's Lost in Blue 3, but I didn't look much further as the GBC seems the most interesting one for me.

this does not really count as a survival game it is however the earliest crafting game I know of

Evil islands

It is an RPG and you mainly crafting all the weapons and armor you use in the game. hunting things like boars and trolls or you can get better crafting materials to improve your armor and weapons

i can't remember where i learned about it but i suspect it was from someone on this forum. kick ass little game, bit of a shame it never seemed to be taken seriously and developed extensively. i guess when the unreal engine became obsolete we lost more than we realised
FlowerChild makes heroes of us all, and gives us battle axes where we had swords weak as zombie paws.
