Re: Hardcore Beacons *SPOILERS, CHEAT FREE*
Well, I finally built my first beacon in my main survival world. Behold:
It appears that the Lapis Beacon gives you an effect called "True Sight". I'm not yet sure what it does, but I would guess that it's something to complement the Ender specs.
Oh my god the range on this thing makes me happy. I'm right about on the edge of it right here, probably around 150-200 blocks away.
....And as it got dark, I discovered what this beacon is useful for. Bravo, my good man, bravo. I can't wait to go caving with this :)

Thanks man! I tried to make each and every one of them desirable, so I'm happy to hear you were this pleased with your first :)Briali wrote:....And as it got dark, I discovered what this beacon is useful for. Bravo, my good man, bravo. I can't wait to go caving with this :)

I've made a 3-level iron pyramid and I got no clue what it does.
I also made a 3-level rope coil pyramid and it lit on fire and gave me fire resistance. haha. I was surprised by that.
Wicker gives fire resistance and lights on fire as well.
Melons don't work at all.

Re: Hardcore Beacons *SPOILERS, CHEAT FREE*
Someone just posted (and then deleted the post, I guess) that the iron pyramid needs to be used in the Nether. However, I tried it and it doesn't seem to work. I tried building it in a place with as many air blocks directly above it as I could but it won't activate. What am I doing wrong? I know FC built one in the Nether.
Re: Hardcore Beacons *SPOILERS, CHEAT FREE*
Actually I thought the iron one made the compass point to it but I think I was just being a tard, because I moved it in the Overworld and it didn't seem to work. I also tried moving it to the Nether but I couldn't get it to activate. Hmm...BobSlingblade679 wrote:Someone just posted (and then deleted the post, I guess) that the iron pyramid needs to be used in the Nether. However, I tried it and it doesn't seem to work. It's nice not having to worry about glass getting destroyed in the nether ;) ;) Thanks FC

The rope and wicker thing is a bug that I've already fixed. They share blockIDs with a block that's supposed to do that, and a typo on my part extended that ability to some others as well :)BobSlingblade679 wrote:I've made a 3-level iron pyramid and I got no clue what it does.

it seems that iron ones pull the compass towards them and becomes weaker the further away for pulling the compass towards them. i made a iron one and it points towards it for a while tell i get further away.
also glow stone works :D wont ruin it

Goodness me, Fortune III - I am really rather pleased! Very expensive, used up every diamond I could scrape together (And this world is pretty ancient, there are areas which date back to using leaves as windows), but wow!FlowerChild wrote:

I don't know if you were giving a hint of some kind but I built a 1x1 column of glass from the beacon to the bedrock ceiling in the Nether and it still won't activate. Could someone just tell me? lolEcoweb wrote:It's nice not having to worry about glass getting destroyed in the nether ;) ;) Thanks FC

You sure it's level III and not IV? :)Shengji wrote:Goodness me

A couple of blocks short of filling the lowest level! I'm off to my mines!FlowerChild wrote:You sure it's level III and not IV? :)
EDIT IN, to save spamming post:
Just a theory but:

Do these also come with drawbacks. Dark areas in my world are now inky black, completely un-navigable. If not then it's more than likely a graphics issue as I have just updated my driver and my brand of PC hates the generic drivers!

They do, but that isn't one of them. You most likely have a graphics issue.Shengji wrote:SpoilerShowDo these also come with drawbacks. Awesome! That's what I like to hear! Finally, mining is back in as a desirable in-game activity :)Shengji wrote:A couple of blocks short of filling the lowest level! I'm off to my mines!
It may not be readily apparent with those of us that have older worlds, and thus an abundance of resources with which to build our beacons, but one of my goals here was to give players something to really work towards while mining, with a reward sufficient to justify all the effort involved.
I think this should have a very positive effect on the game given how Mojang has been slowly removing the fun from mining for a very long time now, particularly on SMP servers where these kinds of things can turn into communal projects for the benefit of everyone.

I made a two tier pyramid of glowstone and got Epilepsy II. Still saving up emeralds and gold assuming they will do something

I'll save people some trouble on this one, as I don't think it's necessarily intuitive, but may be very useful.wirer wrote:Glass works, Effects Unknown. Any Ideas?
The point of glass pyramids is that they have no point :)
I put them in as a purely aesthetic option for people that want to decorate with beacons. All the other beacon types have secondary effects which may be undersirable. Glass ones do absolutely nothing other than look pretty.
Think of it as an insulating material that prevents the beacon from doing anything else. That's why I chose that material anyways.

Re: Hardcore Beacons *SPOILERS, CHEAT FREE*
Aside from the nether star cost, having a cheap, purely for show Luxor beacon to cap off a larger pyramid is actually pretty damn cool.

Re: Hardcore Beacons *SPOILERS, CHEAT FREE*
Yeah, that was the idea. I know people were previously primarily using vanilla beacons decoratively given that they were totally fucking useless, so I wanted to make sure to preserve that use of them, as they are rather purty :)DaveYanakov wrote:Aside from the nether star cost, having a cheap, purely for show Luxor beacon to cap off a larger pyramid is actually pretty damn cool.
Re: Hardcore Beacons *SPOILERS, CHEAT FREE*
I see. thanks for the heads up. time to continue experimenting.
Re: Hardcore Beacons *SPOILERS, CHEAT FREE*
I don't suspect this would work, but do multiple material pyramids create multiple effects? I have yet to get enough materials to make a beacon.

Re: Hardcore Beacons *SPOILERS, CHEAT FREE*
That's another one that would be a massive pain in the ass to determine through experimentation, and still I doubt you'd ever be certain it wasn't the case.EpicAaron wrote:I don't suspect this would work, but do multiple material pyramids create multiple effects? So yeah, I'll answer that one too: no, only a single material can be active in a beacon material.
Re: Hardcore Beacons *SPOILERS, CHEAT FREE*
Can anybody confirm this? After experimenting for a while I got it once to do that but after removing the beacon to experiment further and putting it back on the iron one I couldn't get it to work again.casinodoug wrote:it seems that iron ones pull the compass towards them and becomes weaker the further away for pulling the compass towards them. i made a iron one and it points towards it for a while tell i get further away.

Also, i'm loving the lapis one, thank you, FC.
EDIT: After playing around with it I got it to work: it will only work if the last block, of the pyramid, that you place is an iron block of the topmost layer. It will activate but won't have any effect if you place the beacon last. Is this an isolated incident, a problem with my install or is everyone getting this?

I don't want to give too much away here, so can you post a screenshot of your pyramid setup so I can get an idea if this may be a bug or not?tin wrote: Can anybody confirm this? Also, are you doing this close to your initial spawn point?

Re: Hardcore Beacons *SPOILERS, CHEAT FREE*
Damn it, I just tested and it looks like a bug based on the order in which things are constructed. Will fix.
