Upcoming design change: Villagers

Post by FlowerChild »

Just wanted to put out a warning that I'm planning to drastically rework how villagers behave in Minecraft over the next little while.

As a result, existing villagers traps and such will likely cease to function, and you should probably avoid investing too much time into them until I release the changes.

More details can be found in my dev diary thread.

I say good sir, have at them. It's the vMC mechanic that could do with a rework the most.

Time to put a little fence around my people farm, and a little historic plaque. I think that my villagers will appreciate me archiving the past of their reproduction habits.

So much for finally completing a testy-farm with anti-humanitarian messaging throughout.... Well, can't wait to see these hardcore thralls.

Not to mention a mod that trains the player to be rather morally ambivalent ;)

From FC:
FlowerChild wrote:Well, the villager habitation requirements are going to change drastically, but I'm unlikely to touch the golem spawn requirements, so it will largely depend on the design on your golem farm.

But yes, in all likelihood they will break as well given the dependence on villagers, and at least require some reworking to get going again.

Just finished this the other day. Took ages to get it to function just right but oh well, i suppose that's what this mod is all about. Take it as a lesson kiddies, don't get too attached to anything. :(

The thing I take heart in, is that whatever the new mechanics are going to be, the farms will likely be more interesting and fun than that.

Nah it's cool man, I had a lot of fun overcoming the villagers falling out of minecarts problem, so when i thought of the fishbowl with water pushing them to one end, I was so excited that I got a little obsessed with it. I wouldn't let it go until it worked.
Now I get to do it all again.

P.S. thanks to Battosay for the gate design. It was crucial to stop too many babies getting to the saws at the end.

Well villagers seem to represent what I take to be the "point" of this mod.

That is - partially implemented creatures with no substance to them, like wolves.

I see them as a natural target for FC. And a substantial challenge.

Villagers are unique in minecraft. They make the world more "alive" and take away from the deserted island feel. I remember when I first found a village and got that "we are not alone" feeling.

They also can play a critical function in that they can inhabit a players creations. A friend of mne was playing and built a nice town, with shops, a bar, etc. He really role plays. I don't like to ruin things for him but after he found a village a ways away, I said "show them a diamond" and let him figure the rest out.

We did have to switch from hard to normal, as zombie sieges are unpreventable and babysitting the village is not fun.

Yeah, I'll definitely be doing something about that part. It's annoying as fuck to have no viable defense against them.

Ah so the villagers won't have a fetish for doors anymore?

Excited to see what you're planning with this. I think this was one huge chunk of vMC everyone was a little disappointed with.

Unfortunately, I'm going to be triaging this one in favor of moving on to RTH.

To be clear: there are NOT any planned changes coming for villagers.
