Purchasing a Computer

Post by LJEKadeshi »

So I love playing videogames on my computer, and I recently bought a $500 computer with 1 TB of hardrive 4.2 GHz of processing and 8 gb of ram (7.something available). While this computer runs games decently I would really like to buy a desktop with 16 or 32 GB of RAM and at least 8 GHz of CPU, does anyone have any links or places I could purchase a computer with these stats (other stuff is not but not necesarry (graphics card planned to be purchased)) Preferably under $2000, Thanks for the help!

With a multi-core pc that has at least 2 GHz of CPU on each core, how would that be in my imagination?

Oh... Well processing doesn't exactly work like that. :P

Well then I have no idea how it would work. I just would like a multi-core processor that has (preferably) 8 GHz of processing capability; because having just checked my properties under the control panel it said 2.4 (not 4.2) GHz; so I assumed that was how processing was labeled.

With processing, unless a program is designed with parallel processing in mind, doubling your cores does not double your performance. For example, I'm running a 3 GHz processor with 6 cores, but that doesn't mean that I have an effective clock speed of 18 GHz. It helps with running multiple programs (such as a game and a screen recorder), but most games are designed with single, dual, or quad cores in mind, and aren't split into enough threads to make it worthwhile.

But, what games is it performing poorly in? You should be able to improve your performance just by swapping out or adding parts.

Also, what processor are you using? Assuming you're using a Windows machine (likely, as few manufacturers package their computers with Linux, and you definitely wouldn't get that good of an Apple product for $500), run dxdiag and click the "Save All Information" button. Open the file, and copy/paste the contents of the System Information part into a spoiler on the forums.

Honestly most games run on a single core except maybe a few minor processes. The fact is multithreading is hard and it's even harder to do in unmanaged languages like most games are programmed in. An example of an exception would be the new elemental game by Stardock. But it might give you some idea how rare it is in that it's one of their major selling points. For the most part if you want your game to run fast make sure that you have a fast graphics card, plenty of memory and a high clock speed on your processor. A single core WILL bog you down (not that they sell those anymore) but anything more than a dual core won't generally buy you much.

I know some processors have 8 cores, which would be enough to get it to 8 GHz, but no programs could use all cores, so it wouldn't be worthwhile.

And I have trouble running Tribes Ascend, somtimes Minecraft(while recording I often have frame tearing), Darksiders, and Magicka. But I can run Crysis 2 maxed out graphics at over 100 fps, which I think is a little odd.

The reason you can run crysis 2 at max is that crysis is programmed to heavily utilize your graphics card for physics and graphics calculations at a very deep level. Most of the other games you mention use a rather bulky framework to communicate with the hardware, meaning that there is more overhead calculations going on, especially on your CPU, which will impact performance. Examples are minecraft using Java, whereas Magicka uses microsofts XNA framework.

Another cause of your performance might be the harddrive in your computer. Way too many prebuilt computers come as standard with a 5400 RPM drive, and while they might be supplied from a decent manufacturer like Seagate or Western Digital, even those companies have a cheap line of drives with lower performance, and these are favoured by retailers. In comparison, most desktop computers have 7200 RPM drives with vastly larger caches, meaning that more data can be accessed faster, or even solid-state drives for enthusiasts.

Finally, there is the fact that your graphics card only has half a gig of dedicated memory. While it says "up to 4 gigs" on the box, the 3½ gigs are taken out of your system memory if you use them. And while more memory is better, standard system memory is not nearly as good for graphics as dedicated graphics ram on the card itself. This is extra important because you have a high-resolution monitor.

So I found a CPU store, and I'm curious if there is any to go for a 15 MB cache instead of a 12 MB cache?

Depends entirely on the CPU and what the other differences and costs are.

There is no way we can help you unless you post a build log of some sort. I would suggest Newegg.com, and make a "wishlist". You can then copy the urls of all the parts here or another forum and ask for advice.
