Question about wolf breeding in the pre-releases

Post by FlowerChild »

Just a quick question for anyone who has been playing the pre-releases:

How do you heal your wolves now, if feeding them meat kicks them into love-mode?

Hmm... Thats a damn good question. I feel like bones should send them into breeding mode. There is, in fact, a positive to this, though. The wolves that will reproduce most are the ones who are getting hurt. Eventually, natural selection will give us borderline suicidal wolves.

I haven't played it myself yet, but from Morv's news there was a comment about this. I think they were only allowing wolves to enter breeding mode if they were at max health, otherwise food would just heal them.

Hang on here for a second. If feeding meat kicks 'em into love mode, and we have feed them to make them produce their precious, precious dung in their dingy holes...... Ahhh!! What kind of sick creatures are they!

Hmm, after reading this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laxative#Saline

Coffee is a laxative (not that i've noticed, but anyway). Maybe we can start feeding the wolves coffee beans to get them producing.

might need to collect it with a bucket though. Dung factories may start looking like Hippoplatimus's Paint mod tho.

Ergh... i think i just made myself feel sick.

I already have a plan for their producing dung with the next MC release. Just wanted to be certain of the details.

I could have swore reading about them fixing the behavior so that they will be healed as they were previously and only go into "love mode" when fully healed. I don't recall if that's for the latest prerelease or if I heard that was planned for or what, unfortunately. I haven't bothered with the snapshots as their progress has been rather accelerated lately and I see no point trying stuff out until the changes slow down a bit. Which means I haven't been testing this myself.

Oh... haha, I remember this idea popping up a while ago... I made this little diagram back then to illustrate... of course this would be BTB only...

Honestly, with wolf breeding, it feels like making a large dung farm would just be far too easy. Breeding OTHER animals with wheat is fine because (with the exception of sheep) you have to kill them to get any use out of them. Wolves, however, shouldn't be able to breed like rabits, because ideally they won't be dying rapidly. In the vanilla game, wolf breeding is at least slightly justified by the fact that wolves will be following you into combat, and have a good chance of dying, and there should indeed be a way to make more. Even then, it would still be in your best interest to keep the wolves alive, but there's at least the POSSIBILITY that your wolves will die.

With dung farms, however, that's not the case at all. With wolves' utility in BTW, it really seems to me like it should be more difficult to breed them. But I trust your judgment, FC, and I'm sure you already realize most to all of what I've just said. Just thought I'd share just in case.

FC: Will this change require us to heavily redesign our automated dung production, or will existing setups continue to work?

Nah, they'll continue to work man. I generally try not to break existing systems with my changes.

You may have to do a little "maintenance" on them to update them to the new system, but it'll take 5 minutes tops...and a piece of your humanity.

Just when you think it can't get any worse, this happens.

Should I be seeking professional help if I'm excited to see what the change is?

I have a feeling we'll have to feed wolves wolf chops to get them to produce dung.

In the end this should obviously mean a wolfy version of mad-cow disease.

We'll have to let them see the sunlight? But their poor puppy eyes have been accustomed to the darkness and they've developed agoraphobia and become antisocial. Keeping them in a dark, dank underground room and being machine fed is all for their own good!

Take three parts Testificate tears and blend it with one part of their still beating hearts. Drink the smoothie. Should work.
