I'm trying to build a castle gate that part of raises into the ceiling, while the other part lowers into the ground...it's kinda like an old freight elevator door.
Not sure if I'm explaining this correctly, so just hit me up if you need more...maybe Batto can come up with something?

Doesn't seem that hard depending on dimensions. How big does it need to be?

Depending on how tall you wanted it, you could use piston for the bottom layer? And then more pistons, or a elevator for the top part?
Is that what you're after, or more specific impementations ideas, like how to power them?

Abuse the limitations on how far from the anchor the elevator will pull.
Crude diagram, but [] is a platform, X is an anchor, | is obviously rope going to your pulleys. Have the bottom two lower, and the upper two rise. Simplest way, IMO, to make the kinda of door you're talking about.
Code: Select all

X [] [] X
[] [] [] []
[] [] [] []
| [] [] [] [] |
X [] [] [] [] X
[] [] [] [] [] []
Abracadabra, you're an idiot.

I'm too tired to describe my setup and it isn't on this laptop ><
Fracture has it right though, size becomes a limiting factor for this type of design quickly especially if you're trying to hide the ropes
