If not, use windmills
* Choke Choke Die*
Victim: Damn Poison cupcakes......
Bystander: Oooo a cupcake.
And the cycle continues until someone builds an immunity to it or we all die. Either way it has got to suck being the last person alive..

Windmill will give you power, but you will lack the transport that water supplies, so you can't really make anything automatic or even semi automatic. You could make a much more efficient factory on the surface, and process your netherack there.

IC^2 allows for you to compact snow into Ice.. I know this is a separate mod from BTW, but it is a Forge mod.. which means it's an option that you can have...

Other than that, windmills are simply a better option for mechanical power, or planters for planting...
I'm not trying to come off as strong as I do. It's hard for me to personally see how I'm affecting others (even in real like).. and it makes me seem more of an ass than I want to be, so I apologize if you find what I say 'a bit rough'...

You can also use buildcraft to automate everything.
