How to install OLD BTW with MultiMC [Pre-BTW CE 2.0.X]

Post by EpicAaron »

This guide works for Flowerchild versions and Community Edition versions older than CE 2.0.X.
To install CE 2.0.X, refer to this new guide: https://www.sargunster.com/btwforum/vie ... hp?t=10218

We knew this day would come... Microsoft has abandoned us old fashioned players. As old launcher installation methods become increasingly muddled and outdated, it has become necessary to find a more stable means of installing and playing Better Than Wolves. Thankfully, a group of dedicated Minecrafters have come together to produce a third party launcher specifically designed for players that like to mod the game and keep many different versions of Minecraft at the same time...

MULTIMC!!!

MultiMC feels like the launcher Mojang should have given us years ago. It arranges all of your Minecraft version in a tidy, customizable box, and mods can be installed with the click of a button. I have used MultiMC to play BTW for years, as have many other longtime players including Dawnraider herself. If you are tired of deciphering ancient installation guides for outdated launchers, then please just give this guide a shot.

STEP 1:
Download MultiMC from this link:
https://multimc.org/#Download

STEP 2:
Run MultiMC and click through any setup windows. The program should automatically detect your installed java version. If you do not have java already, then you can get it by running Minecraft version 1.5.2 through the default Minecraft launcher once.

OR, better yet, you can just directly install the exact version of java you need through Adoptium: https://adoptium.net/?variant=openjdk8& ... nt=hotspot
BTW uses java 8, so download and install the Adoptium java version labeled Temurin 8.

STEP 3:
Once set up, you will see the main MultiMC menu.

Right click the blank space to create a new instance of the game.

Give it a name, like "Better Than Wolves," and choose Minecraft version 1.5.2.

Image

You can even give this instance a custom image. I like to download images of BTW blocks from the wiki and use them as custom MultiMC icons.

STEP 4:
Once you create the instance, look at the sidebar on the right. Select "Edit Instance."

Image

STEP 5:
Keep your eyes on the right sidebar. Select "Add to Minecraft.jar" and select the BTW client zip that you want to install.

You do not need to fiddle with the zip file at all if you are installing recent CE versions. Old Flowerchild versions, however, require you to unpack them because they contain both the client and server files.

The mod files will be automatically added to the game and will now be listed on this page.

A NOTE ABOUT MCPATCHER: Better Than Wolves Community Edition comes with mcpatcher pre-installed. It is already included in the zip file, you do not need to install any other files.

STEP 6:
That's it! You can run the instance by double clicking the icon or by selecting "Launch." You can check that the mod is running by looking at the bottom left corner of the main menu screen.

Java trouble?
Java, like old versions of Minecraft, is also becoming dilapidated. Thankfully, the folks at Adoptium have made it as straightforward as possible to find the JDK you need to play old versions of Minecraft. Remember, 1.5.2/BTW requires JDK 8, which is listed right on the front page of Adoptium's website.

If you have trouble, I recommend uninstalling your current java versions and starting fresh with Adoptium 8 and nothing else. If you also like to play newer MC versions, also install Adoptium 17.

You can fiddle with MultiMC's java settings from the "Settings" menu at the top of the program. While you are in there, I recommend also increasing the maximum RAM allotted to the game. :D

Questions? Addons?
Feel free to ask in this thread or on the BTW Discord if you have any installation trouble.

Addons are installed the same way as the base mod. Simply "Edit Instance," then "Add to Minecraft.jar."

I put a note in the header about the CE 2.0 change.

I will find some time eventually to release a new picture guide. I would also love to make a video guide someday.

Well it does still work for CE 2.0.0+ still, you just need to start with importing the fabric instance instead of creating a new instance :)
