Other good(?) games

Post by Urian »

It's probably safe to assume that everyone here enjoys computer games, therefore I thought to ask what other games you enjoy or are looking forward to?

I'm currently playing through the Deus Ex trilogy anew (well, I've only played the first two games before but since it's a plot focused series (with Invisible War being somewhat less so than the others) I thought it best to refresh my memory). I can also strongly recommend giving Bastion a try, it's another indie game available on steam so it's easy to access and pretty cheap but with a very good design.

I'm sort of waiting for the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO to be released, I'm not a fan of the Star Wars world/universe/series but it looks pretty good and it's made by BioWare so I'll give it a try :p

Command & Conquer: Red Alert: A Path Beyond is a game I used to be quite addicted to. It's an indie mod based of good 'ole C&C renegade, but it's done right. Got boring after a few years, so I'm taking a break until the 2.1 update is finished >.<

This thread has reminded me how long it's been since I've actually played a...well, professionally made game though.

I personally enjoy the Asian MMORPG's (some of my favuorites: MU Online, Metin2 (with wich I playing now on the singaporean server), 9Dragons (and some more, but those are not good)). The problem is that older MMO's don't look too good, and the newer ones are unnecessarily overcomplicated (1001 ways of crafting and enchanting and quests and pets and all the repetitive junk). That's why I like Metin2, it's not that all bad looking, I really like it's skill system because it's very simple. Put the biggest problem about MMORPG's is that they consume too much time, mainly because of the endless hours of grinding to lvl up.

That's why I'm waiting for the European Releas of the 'Age of Wulin - Legend of the Nine Scrolls' (although it seems very similar to 9Dragons, but a lot better)
(as far as I know, CBT will start in october (in china), and the EU CBT will start in 2012 (hopefully I'll get a free Beta key by pre-registrateing :D))
This game seems very amazing, It doesn't have leveling system (so you don't have to spend many time with leveling), 10.000+ quests, and a uniqu combat system (something like scissor-paper-rock), there'll be (if I'm right >.o) three basic moves, one will hit the other, so you can flee the enemys attack or counterattack it (it's all based on thinking with the enemy's head, what might be his/her next move?), so it will surely not be a copy (especially not a WoW copy, but there's always some rock-headed ppl who says that all the mmo's are wow copys)
here's a video (can't link the video itself.. only the link)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgBisoPHom4&NR=1

I also like strategy games, especially the 'stronghold' series (Stronghold, Stronghold Crusader, Stronghold 2, etc), I'm waiting for the release of Stronghold 3 (which will be in less than a month in Europe)(although I'm not sure if it'll run on my computer)

Nowadays (since I've seen diegokilla playing Mount and Blade on the btw livestream once >.o) I'm playing a lot of Mount and Blade :D that game is fun.

I also like the wild west FPS games (I like the Native Americans :D.... too bad mainly all the wild west games are about shooting them :( ), some examples: GUN, Call of Juarez (one of my favuorite) and Call of Juarez 2 - Bound in Blood (that is also very good imo)

And someone linked a Bastion OST in the 'what are you listening to right now' topic, nah I'm not playing Bastion (I don't want to play), but I'm listening to those OST's almost all day >.> and I've seen a few videos, and it's story really seems amazing, (and along with the musics) heart-touching

Looking forward to Skyrim. Also had a ton of fun with Shogun 2, ME 2, Witcher 2, and Starcraft 2 (lotta 2's). Hell, it might be worthwhile to narrow down the genre of what kind of games you're looking for, because I can name about 50 games off the top of my head that I've enjoyed playing.

EDIT: Forgot Dead Space 2. Awesome game.

I'm mostly into competitive games, and when I'm not playing those I enjoy playing co-op with my friends/girlfriend or just relaxing in singleplayer.
Games I like include the Street Fighter games, Batman: Arkham Asylum, The Lego games (Yes, they're awesome!), Red Dead Redemption, Brütal Legend, and I've in recent months gotten into Starcraft 2.

I'm looking forward to Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 2, the balance patch for Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Batman: Arkham City, Mass Effect 3 and Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm.

When it comes to MMOs, I used to be into them alot and I still have a huge interest in MMOs and social games in a theoretical sense but I don't find the time to play MMOs a whole lot anymore. I prefer sandbox MMOs over anything else since I feel that cramping a story into a game that is all about player interaction is stupid and is much better suited for co-op and singelplayer games. Eve Online is imo the only proper MMO out there these days. I was really disappointed by Darkfall and my long lost love SWG was screwed many years ago.

Unfortunately my wallet is really flat these days so I'll probably have to chose carefully among those games. :S

Sword of the stars is one of my favorite games.

It's the perfect mix of turn based strat and RTS combat. It's re playable due to the random tech tree and the combat looks greats.

Lately, I'm playing global agenda a ton. The best way to describe it... It's like a third person, sci-fi version of WoW. Haha. I've also played quite a bit of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Fun game :)

With the start of the new college year, my free time has been reduced to a minimum. As such, I only really have time for one big game, ie Minecraft.

I have been playing (competitive) Pokemon via Pokemon Online casually for a few months now. It's really quite a lot of fun and I would recommend everyone to pick it up. The games have a surprisingly deep metagame, especially the second and third generation. It's an imperfect information extensive form game, which practically means that the game is about information management (scouting) and prediction. Honestly though, the best way to find out what it's like is to play it yourself.

Some of these games are pretty far off, but what the heck !

Arkham City, Assassins Creed Revelations, Gears of War 3, Saints Row 3 and Prototype 2. All on Xbox.

I don't know about you guys, but apart from Minecraft and Terraria I'm not a PC gamer.
If it weren't for the original Halo and Team Fortress 2 I would never have used my PC for anything other than a web browser.

My friends often ask me to play WoW with them, and I did play a ten day trial once, I played for ten minutes and got bored, that put me off MMO's for good.

While MMOs definitely is not for anyone, judging the entire genre (Which imo should be split into more definite sub-genres) by one game isn't really right. On the other hand I guess it saves you quite a lot of money from subscription fees :P

I completely forgot Saints Row 3 in the OP, definitely looking forward to that one as well although I'm afraid that they might have made it a bit too much GTA IV-ish.

I tend to do a lot of MMO trials, very few actually keep my interest even for the duration of the trial period but every now and then I find something worth trying out a bit more. The prime factor for deciding if I'll stay with an MMO or not is the community and especially the guild/clan/what-have-you I join. Not only will it help you with in-game stuff (help for quests, raids, crafting, etc) it's also a fun way to pass time even when you're not doing anything. With my guild in WAR we used to often have our vent server nearly full even if noone really played. we simply debated a very wide range of topics from philosophy to phalluses (or phalli) :) MMOs where I haven't found a good guild have never kept my interest past the first month on the other hand...

I know that using one game as an example for an entire genre is a bit harsh, but i really don't like hotkey based stuff and things that are based on actions per minute and the like. Also I think making the consumer pay a monthly subscription on a game is an evil and money-grabbing thing to do :@

@Urian Tbh, I fucking hate GTA, mainly because of the lack of character customization and movement abilities, Saints Row is brilliant for those things, with the parachute, strange unpractical cars and all the clothes you can get.

Honestly, when SR2 came out I spent nearly an hour to make my character ! Ahh... good times ;)

Oh... Selecting weapons in GTA can suck my balls as well, I just like SR better and no hate on anyone who likes GTA ;)

I'm not looking forward to much right now. Mostly the hd release of Shadow of the Colossus later this month. I may buy that and I don't even have a ps3.

The other day I felt like strategy so I played some time on an old favorite, Master of Orion 2- then it's more modern spiritual sequel Galactic Civilizations. Scifi shit, I love it. And it plays deeper than it looks.

I'll go a few rounds with nazi zombies (from world at war) occasionally. I've digested L4D and don't want to play that so I get some zombie stuff going there. I want to play Dead Island but I am personally opposed to full pricing a game I haven't played yet. Figure that out. On the topic of shooting things, I've mostly digested New Vegas too. I still come back to it cause I wanna finish the DLC but I put 300 hours in the first few months and haven't been able to sit that long at it since. I also put a long spell in Divine Cybermancy, which was cleverly released before Deus Ex to scratch and itch with. French developers, maybe three spoken languages in the game, add in how the source engine uses sound and physics, and it creates a very atmospheric experience.

One thing I'm not looking forward to at the moment is Skyrim. I feel the same way about it I do Space Marine, though I don't think they'll equate any other way. I see people I talk to, friends I have, anticipate Skyrim like it's some old flame coming over to get drunk at your place. I have some friends who act like Warhammer 40k games are pornography as well. However, to me, in both those cases it's like seeing BSDM people juicing themselves over their fetish while I stand to the side wanting to understand but somehow unable to, shrugging my shoulders like "well if it's your thing, whatever, I just don't see anything I want there." At least with Skyrim I think Bethesda has persistent faults but they do not make games which are not fun.

Gonna quote myself from the MCF, about an awesome space combat sim I play.

me wrote: Freespace 2 is a hidden gem, but due to *very* bad timing of the release back in 1999, it flew almost completely under the radar. It's a space combat simulator, basically you fly around in fighters and bombers trying to kill the bad guys while massive capital ships do battle around you. The sense of scale is pretty epic, many of the capital ships totally dwarf whatever you are flying and can very easily kill you if you get close, but the game is balanced in such a way that the outcome of missions depends entirely on you.

Now while it was made in 1999, Freespace 2 has one of the most talented modding communities I've ever come across. They've managed to bring the graphics well up to modern day standards, so the game just looks absolutely gorgeous. As well as that, there's hundreds of user made campaigns, many of them giving many hours of gameplay, and some of them are even fully voice acted, so you don't have to read lines of text :3

(EDIT: Oh yeh it has multiplayer, but I don't think it's very active. FS2 is more about single player epicness.)

Anyway, the game can be bought from Good Old Games (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/freespace_2) for 6 bucks (it's worth at least $90 with the upgraded graphics ^^), and the tutorial for getting the updated graphics is here:
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index. ... ic=61606.0
Those forums are the hub of the modding community, and it's where you will find all the epic user made campaigns and such. There's even a remake of Freespace 1 with the modern graphics, which you can get for free provided you bought Freespace 2. Two games in one! :D

Ratings:
GoG user rating: 5/5
IGN: 8.9/10
Gamespot: 9.4/10 (editors choice!)
Metacritic: 91/100

I can second Freespace 2 without reservation. It's one of those games that holds up quite well 12 years later.

If you like competition and want to try an MMO, Eve Online is as hardcore as it gets. I've not seen another that allows you to steal the belongings of the players you defeat while still allowing a 1 week old player a chance to defeat someone who has been flying battleships for half a decade.

Team Fortress 2 used to be good but I've not played it since before they added microtransaction stuff. Call of Duty and Battlefield series are the other go-to brand names with Battlefield lending itself more toward team rather than individual play.

Just Mass Effect 3. None of the other games out there really intrigue me, but if a really good puzzler came out I'd probably get it.

Sweet another EVE Fan :), Yeah EVE is an awesome game only problem is that at most times it takes hours of your life away and is very very addictive (oh and its pay to play unless you make enough ISK for "plex").

I like Pay2Play a lot more than any of the micro-transaction centered games out there. They tend to be deliberately unbalanced just because they want you to pay for stuff. Eve is, imo, the only porper MMO these days. Every other MMO tries to focus too much on either storytelling (and there by hindering people from playing together in a proper way), ways to make players NOT interact (I'm looking at you WoW) or just simply don't offer enough gameplay and or social tools. I just wish Darkfall had been better.
The ultimate MMO, if you ask me, would be a mash-up between early SWG, Eve Online and the combat from Darkfall :P Aaah... I need to stop dreaming.

I agree with you about Hard Reset - I watched TotalBiscuit's playthrough of the press demo, and I was surprised. It just shows what you can do when you have a mouse and keyboard instead of a dual-stick controller, as well as not having to balance their graphics options around the consoles' specs.
