Using the argument in the linked thread above, and if FlowerChild reads this, a good series to remedy that would be the series that were not supposed to mention on this thread :P Very good series, combines an extremely strong narrative with a more modern and (could be argued) better writing style. All in all, much easier to read, and there were several times where I was reading and couldn't stop for several hundred pages because the books were just too damn good.
*hint* it was made into a very popular show on HBO if you're not sure exactly what I'm talking about yet ;)
