Who does the BTW artwork?

Post by RaustBlackDragon »

Hey, just wondering, who does the sprites for the blocks and items in BTW? Is it FlowerChild, or somebody else?

I would assume FC, because then someone would be able to know what is coming up, plus I believe he had said something along the lines of "sprite work is more hard to come up with the recipes"

Yeah, I do it myself. I'm no artist, but it's functional :)

Ah. Damn. Well so much for that plan.

But yeah, the art's really good honestly, I wish I could do my own artwork.

Thanks man. I appreciate that, but I'm habituated to working with professional artists, and critiquing their work, so anything do sucks in my eyes by comparison ;)

It really is quite good to be honest. No naming names here, but there are a lot of great mods out there, with really bad textures. Like a white cube with random colours on it, for example.

It's one of the little tihngs that makes BTW so endearing imo. Even if it would be nice if there was more up-to-date TP support -.-

I know the feeling, kinda. I used to do music, and I always found myself feeling like my music sucked, even though others were really impressed by it at times.

So yeah, I notice you don't mind mods that implement your mod as long as it doesn't modify any base class files, so mods like the dynamo mod (mechanical power to IC power) are okay with you. I was hoping that I could contact your artist and have him do the sprite for a "Cerberus Tag" or something, basically a dog tag made out of soulforged steel (I'm going to make dog tags a form of equipment in the next doggy talents patch), and then have that as an expansion pack to Doggy Talents that would require your mod. But since it's you doing it, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you're not interested.

Hehe...thanks man. Well, I do *try* to at least make the textures look somewhat reasonable. I don't think I always succeed, but I do make an effort.

And yeah, I know exactly what you mean. There's at least one major mod out there that I just can't bring myself to try due to the predominance of flat grey boxes everywhere. I'm all about function over form, but even I have my limits :)

- I clicked edit, so this post shouldn't be. yet it is. -

In place of my failure, in a game like minecraft, the textures really are important. It's kinda sad to see how there are a lot of mods designed simply to look pretty out there who get loads of TP support, and yet the mods that tend to need it get effectively ignored.

I really hope dante's hand gets sorted soon though. I miss albion -.-

Raust, I'm a professional games artist. If you need some textures, just send me a PM. I can't promise I'll get around it, but I usually do :)

Just a quick question thats slightly off topic, how do you artists get inspiration for the sprites?
I find it very hard to go about making textures from scratch.

Practice. I've been doing art for games for 10 years, general arts since I could hold a crayon. I went to art academy when I was young, was in art college for two years. There's no answer to questions like yours, just practice your skills. Traditional art skills are a necessity. There's no such thing as being a "texture artist" or a "modeler" or whatever. You still need your traditional art skills.

Making stuff from scratch is all about having a large database of shapes, constructions, etc, in your mind. This comes automatically after just practicing every day. If you are still in doubt how to tackle something, look up pictures of similar things and study the volumes, colors, etc.
