The Avengers
Since I know a lot of us here are into this sort of stuff (which is a nice way of saying we are all nerds in our own special way). I thought I would share this trailer for the new Avengers movie I saw, and ask what you guys thought of it.
*If someone would be so kind as to fix the Youtube video*Thank:)

Re: The Avengers
Sorry I'm a total marvel/DC noob, I like them but have never really gotten around to watching/reading much of their stuff.
But anyway, I'm guessing Avengers is sort of like the Justice League? Or is Avengers part of the Justice League, or am I committing heresy and mixing up marvel and DC D:

Re: The Avengers
You can't be that much of a noob Grimper, you totally lost me :p For some reason I've never read any superhero comics or such, the closes is probably Sandman by Neil Gaiman or Watchmen by Alan Moore (I've also never seen a single episode of Star Trek ;) ).
Regarding the movie, it's got Scarlett Johansen in leather. It's ok :)

Re: The Avengers
Oh trust me there's a billion rabid fanboys out there just itching to prove I'm a noob about it, and once they do they will get back to arguing over who would win in a fight to the death between Iron Man and Batman.
Re: The Avengers
It's defintely got my intrest on the grounds that none of the marvel movies have been "Daaaaamn. That... that was good" (I think the last movie i had that response to was Disney's Tangled. Which was, well, Daaaamn. That was good.), they've all been incredibly solid, incredibly fun, and all around enjoyable - Which is exactly what i wanted from them.
So from that angle, i'm hoping they keep it up.
On the other hand, it's Joss Whendon. And while the dear man has done some fantastic stuff, his compulsive need for "DRAMA AND ANGST AND BAD ENDS" (Unfair, i know, but i like my hyperbole, so shush) is increasingly turning me off his work - I wanna watch superhero movies for villains monologing epically, then getting punched in the face. Not "Anngssst! Annngsst! A brief respite of action, with a forecast of ANNNGST".
Ahem.
So, cautiously optimistic?

Re: The Avengers
It's like the Justice League... more specifically, it's a counter balance against X-Men in the Marvel universe because of the fact the Avengers answers to S.H.I.E.L.D, (who basically answers to the U.N. and other prominent national governments) and the X-Men don't thanks to a few 'incidents' between Mutants and human organizations. So the Avengers is the 'alternative' for world powers to combat against supervillian threats w/o having to beg for the X-Men to intervene.grimper12341 wrote:Sorry I'm a total marvel/DC noob, I like them but have never really gotten around to watching/reading much of their stuff.

There have been a few cross overs between X-Men and the Avengers in the comic series as well, where they have to team together against really aggressive threats against the planet. Pretty awesome, imo...
I'm not trying to come off as strong as I do. It's hard for me to personally see how I'm affecting others (even in real like).. and it makes me seem more of an ass than I want to be, so I apologize if you find what I say 'a bit rough'...
Re: The Avengers
I'm just happy they seem to have pulled it off without losing any more actors. I was of the impression there would be another origin movie before they pulled them all together, maybe Black Panther? but that might have been too risky. Downy and Jackson have been pretty loyal to the series but if Evans, Hemsworth or god forbid the hulk actor(again) left the franchise for whatever reason, it would make a team movie very awkward.
I've only read a few of the comics, but I've seen most of the animated movies, and read a few of the novels. I like the group dynamics better than x-men but maybe thats because I've seen x-men rehashed so many times. The story lines always seemed a tad weak to me though so it will be interesting to see what they can pull off. If they eventually go for the Civil War plot I will be happy, but I think they should just drop all pretenses and do a marvel zombie movie. You know you want it.
I love Starke's line to Banner about why hes a fan...

Re: The Avengers
I've always liked the Marvel movies for pretty much the same reasons I like the Transformer movies: It's pretty much pornography for any one interested in 3d graphics! That said, some of them have surprised me with more depth then I was expecting while others have been the other way around. All in all I'm looking forward to the avengers.

While everyone knows that Batman beats the crap out of Tony Stark, I'd love Capcom even more than I already do if they made a Marvel vs DC vs Capcom game :)
Re: The Avengers
Honestly, the Transformers movies are a terrible example of 3d graphics. They're all flash, and no substance - terrible useage of silhouette, cluttered models, and by all reports, horrific render times, which is not something to boast about - It's something to go "How can we improve this?". They're just terrible in a ton of respects, and a lot of where they fall down isn't even specific to 3d animation, it's just good sense when it comes to art.Tekei wrote:I've always liked the Marvel movies for pretty much the same reasons I like the Transformer movies: It's pretty much pornography for any one interested in 3d graphics! (Yes, i have studied 3D animation. It's not my specialty, and i suck at the animating side of thing, but i have at least some idea of what i'm talking about when it comes to modelling and textutring. And as said, it's just basic art & design principals, which i DO know, and which they're failing at).
You want good 3D? Go watch a pixar movie, go watch Disney's Tangled. Those are amazing examples. I'll reserve judgement for the Adventures of Tin-Tin until i see it, but that's at least looking interesting. Marvel's Thor did amazing things with Asgard, same with the Iron Man suits in Ironman.
Those are all good examples. The transformers movies are just bad.

Seriously?.. All flash and no substance? I thought that was the point of those movies?Mrchaim wrote:Honestly, the Transformers movies are a terrible example of 3d graphics. I had written a very long response to this but I think we'd better discuss it some time in the steam chat :)
In the end, yes Disney and Pixar have always been the masters of animated movies and I have been a fan of their work for very long. That doesn't change the fact that Transformers have great 3d effects. That you dislike every other aspect of the movie doesn't mean that the 3d effects were any less impressive.
I've been studying game design and graphics for 4 years at university level. I do think I know enough about the subject to have an opinion of my own. I really don't see how it changes anything though.Mrchaim wrote:(Yes, i have studied 3D animation. Re: The Avengers
He does make a point about silhouettes. Transformers is very cluttered visually.
Not very good design by a long shot.

That'd be fun, actually - It's always good to have a nice debate.Tekei wrote: I had written a very long response to this but I think we'd better discuss it some time in the steam chat :)

But the thing is the transformers movies for me is that the 3D just doesn't work on an number of levels - the silhouettes just aren't there, the sheer detailing actually gets in the way in combat scenes, and you simply cant tell who's who in the combat scenes half the time, which is a bit of a problem when it comes to giant robots punching each other out.
Basically, for me, at the end of the day they're technically proficient movies (3D graphic wise... mostly) - But no matter how technically proficient your stuff is, if you cannot apply it with some style and some zest, a little bit of spark to things, why the hell did you bother in the first place? (exceptions will be made if you were drawing for a medical journal.)
Hopefully that perspective makes sense.
Sorry, that wasn't meant to come off as a "mine is the only opinion that matters!" type thing, more "so you know I'm not talking out my arse". Apologies if it came off the wrong way.Tekei wrote: I've been studying game design and graphics for 4 years at university level. Re: The Avengers
it does, and its how I always judge movies. Transformers however, is to me more of a techinical demo than anything else. I guess the problem here is that I said:Mrchaim wrote:Hopefully that perspective makes sense.
You took it as "Transformers are really good movies" or something along those lines while all I meant was, they "have awesome effects". It's the equivilent of watching pron (hence my analogy in the first place). I couldn't care less about the story or pacing in porn as long as I get to see things that get my lower regions interested.Tekei wrote:I've always liked the Marvel movies for pretty much the same reasons I like the Transformer movies: It's pretty much pornography for any one interested in 3d graphics!
And I'm not sure I agree about silhouettes being the problem, imo it's always been the camera angles and the frequent clips that get confusing. That's a whole other discussion though. Im usually in the Steam chat so feel free to jump in and discuss this (or anything else) whenever you want. I'm gonna stop this discussion in this thread though as to not step too far off topic.
No worries man :)Mrchaim wrote:Sorry, that wasn't meant to come off as a "mine is the only opinion that matters!" type thing, more "so you know I'm not talking out my arse". Apologies if it came off the wrong way.
