Only drowning or fists work for slimes as far as I know (well I think anything works on the littlest ones). I have a fairly small slime spawning room (and another point where they spawn on my railway tracks), and have more than enough just by punching them, they are ridiculously easy to kill, and once the glue production starts, not really required, so I never bothered making a proper grinder for them.

Here's how I did a vertical one. Drops pass under the blades, no need to use the water piston thingy.

The top 2 can be replaced by panels if you want to save on space - a full block can prevent mobs toucing the saw blade, but a half block is fine.

Yeah it probably would do, in hindsight. I've never made a spider-compatible mobtrap in my life though - no point wasting a mob spawn on something useless - so that was an oversight on my part :|

you could still do it with 2 saws and 2 panels though (hostile mobs only), just do it like this:
