Ok, after thinking about it for a bit, my conclusion is as follows:

Fuck thorns.

It's not a particularly useful enchant, and at present any of the options I can think of for where to drop it just feel forced.

Unless someone strenuously objects and just absolutely needs to have it NOWZ, I'll leave it to a later date when Mojang inevitably includes some half-baked plant monster into vanilla ;)

Looks like I'll have to wait til 1.6, not that I actually want thorns, it's just that I'm sure that among the new mobs they plan on making in 1.6 at least one of them has to be so fucked up that it would drop a thorns scroll ;)

You can simply introduce a player created cactus golem, that runs around randomly spreading sand and shoots thorns that do no damage ;]

EDIT: oh, and thorns is a wasted enchant slot/ton of exp on any piece of armour imho, you could have much more useful enchants.

Yeah, it's so useless my eyes must have glazed over in reading the corresponding change log, as I didn't even know it was in the game :)

I think the only actual use for it is to get back at friends who punch you in MP, but even then the III enchant only has a 45% chance of doing a random amount of damage. In actual play, it seriously is useless and just makes your armor's durability run out faster.

Well, that or to possibly try to include a World of Warcraft element in vMC. Link for those who aren't familiar with the WoW spell.

Anyway, it's nice to see that trading with villagers is now worthwhile with the possibility of finding some scrolls.
