They just added a dropper.... which is like a dispencer that also places stuff in chests infront of it....?

According to the wiki:
The Dropper is a new block added in snapshot 13w03a. Unlike a dispenser, it throws items like arrows out, instead of shooting them out. It will also store items in any chest in front of it when powered.

It sounds like it does pretty much the same thing as the hopper, except with the added arrow functionality. It's even crafted with a hopper.

Goddamn, duplicate functionality for the win!

So it's like a hopper. Or an Allocator based on what I've read so far.

Actually I'd be quite happy to use the dropper in my warehouse since I use dispenser based item distribution which doesn't work with arrows and eggs. But it seems a bit weird to add another sort of hopper like thing. Seems a bit redundant to me.

Ever since I started BTW, I wondered why there was no equivalent to the Hopper and the Block Dispenser in vanilla.
Their version clearly lack of the FC touch, but it's a step in the *good* (for me) direction for Minecraft.

Yeah, true, they seem to have a weird set of overlapping functionality. Maybe they will expand upon it, start something good and follow it through for a change. That would be nice... Given the more recent developments, it might actually be the case this time, we'll see... However:

mojang works in mysterious ways sometimes. thier features are always either brilliant or very lame. and unfortunatly the brilliant ones often get poorly implamented. i get the feeling that at some point in the futur someone else will come (heck maybe even notch himeself?) and really start balancing things again, and would leave current vanilla rules aplicable to easy mode only. with hard difficulty adding several restrictive rules. (for example if it was like BTW, easy would have no hardcore modes enabled, while hard would have them all) this would fix minecraft as well as leave it playable for the more casual and younger/simpler audiance.

appart from the occasional poor implementation, i also feel many things are "broken" due to mojang trying to appeal to the widest possible audience. which i think is something alot of people dont consider when critisizing some of mojangs features. they should concentrate on appealing to their ENTIRE audiance while useing the game difficulty as the filter for whos playing the game.

as for the dropper, it does seem a little unnessisary to have an entirely new block for such little added funcionality (wont shoot arrows.... O.o ) it think id be best if they instead added a simple function to the current dispenser. like for example when you open the dispensers GUI youd have a togglable option for bow tightness or the stregnth that items get "dispensed". with tight or fast throwing items as they do now, and loose or slow haveing the dropper type funcionality. that would seem a more elegant solution to me.

That's something for me to keep in mind for when I update the mod to 1.5. I'm sure I can "fix" a lot of this stuff.

Again though, I'm getting pretty sick of spending the bulk of my time fixing Mojang's half-assed features these days instead of working on original content. The beacons weren't so bad mind you, as at least it opened up the possibility of a whole whack of new content in the process.

I find the texture of the dropper quite funny since it looks like a happy face.
It's like a happy dispenser spitting things into chests.

This actually seems interesting... you have to put it to the "side" of a chest, meaning they can be better hidden than a hopper. I/E: In a wall behind said chest. Seems to be for mapmakers... Personally don't see a real use for it outside of maybe a Vending machine in normal play. Tho, honestly... why they didn't just add a checkbox to the Dispencer for this is beyond me...

Tho, i'm more interested in the hopper minecart. so long as a hopper/chest "under" it unloads it. It already picks up anything lying on the ground near it (not sure how near) so good enough reason to set up a loop of rail with a Hopper Minecart (or more, depending on the length of your shaft... pun intended) and throw extra cobble and stuff on the rail for when the cart circles.

While it's a neat idea, wth is the logic behind it? How is it picking up stuff off the floor? I could understand maybe if you rigged it to stop on a un-powered rail, used a hopper above it to dispense items into (or throw them by hand), and then sent it on it's merry way by the push of a button. But just picking stuff up with no justification as to how? I just don't get it.

Always remember, vMC has thrown common logic out the window. Im thinking of it as a personal vacuum. They prolly added it for the sake of making a circuit, and for branch mining without having to stop the cart to put stuff in to it. Tho we do have Chest Minecarts for that. but yea, vMC + Logic... "Does Not Compute" anymore... As long as were "here" complaining" and not complaining to anyone who can make a difference, and as long as there are people who go "gaga" over every new crappy "feature" vMC comes out with... not much to do sept play the game and come up with some reason why X = 42. Well, that's the thing, and why I actually consider bitching about vMC to be a useful thing to do on these forums, as I've made a bit of a hobby out of "fixing" it ;)

Endlessly complaining without doing anything about it is of course useless. However, I think I've demonstrated a rather large willingness to actually change things that are bugging me and others.

And thats why I/We love you ^^. But yea, I guess I see your point. Still sticking to the personal vacuum theory. Item that "sucks" items from chests gets placed in a minecart that can then move, still has all its "sucking" capacity (no pun), hopper facing up so it kinda gains an AOE Vacuum effect while still being able to nab items from chests.

You can now place infinite springs on top of infinite springs. The usual 4 square hole, source block in the corners is the normal method. now you can dig it as deep as you want, and stack it just using the corners instead of having to use every space like before. That vid was a way of demonstrating how that worked on a "large and controlled" scale.

Don't really see how that would be useful, or break HCB at the moment, but we can only wait and see, water still works the same way as before except for one other fix...

The other fix is an ocean fix/lake fix where when you bucket up that top source block and it ends up being buggy, just fills that in too. This is useful tho, hated this bug... uggggh.

So long as HCB only allows you to place "running" water, this shouldn't be a problem, that showed running water still had the same properties as before... hopefuly.... aaaaanyways...

How about those Zombies in daylight lighting "you" on fire?

I've been thinking this over since I saw the video and I can't see of any way this could break HCB. source blocks can't be made ABOVE source blocks, and they still require source blocks on their side so they cant be moved horizontally arbitrarily in HCB. It seems pretty safe with respect to HCB, but time will tell.

Speaking of water changes, can someone else test if activated TNT is still moved by flowing water? I wanted to test out some stuff in the snapshot and it didn't seem to work for me.

And on a related note, the snapshot was really tanking for me. This is my F3 performance graph for 1.4.7 and the snapshot:

The water mechanic update has been a long time coming. I spend too much time fixing it manually.
-Though with downward water sources being created, there's less downflow- so it may mess up some drowning trap/grinder designs.

If the dropper can move items sideways, it may hopefully the end of hopper-piping.
-Also it'll be interesting if minecart dispensing changes to the new dropper.
