Having problems with Linux running mods.

If you're having problems with your installation of Better Than Wolves, or if you've woken up in the future and are beginning to doubt the nature of reality, here's the place to post about it.

Having problems with Linux running mods.

Post by PureZaros »

So, there is something interfering with my Minecraft that makes Better Than Wolves unplayable. I'm running an Ubuntu partition (is that the right term?) on my laptop, which normally runs Windows 7.
Every time I try to install the mods that I use, the screen gets to the Mojang logo and then freezes. No error report (as far as I can tell), the only thing I can do at that point is close out Minecraft and reinstall mods.

Mods I use are:
ModLoader
Optifine
BTW
TMI
Possibly CastleDefense and Wurstknifte's Bookmod if I ever get this ironed out.

I'm pretty sure I've isolated the problem to Modloader (ironically) because if I only install Optifine and TMI it works just fine. As soon as I try to install Modloader and therefore, BTW, the game doesn't go beyond the logo.

Not really looking for a fix, but I would like to understand what the hell my computer is being an ass about now. -.-

Have you tried without Optifine? Optifine is not compatible with BTW.

Yeah, I've deleted the META-INF folder.

Is Optifine really incompatible? I thought that standard (the one with no multi-threading and whatnot) one was still compatible.
Anyway, I'll check.

Lol

Anyway, just tested without Optifine anyway. It's definitely ModLoader that's causing the problems because this time I only tried to install it and BTW. Still no go. No error report or anything.

i had this exact same problem! It made me so angry until I figured out the problem :). It's a problem with File Roller(the default archiver for ubuntu). for some reason, file roller doesn't like minecraft. Instead, use xarchiver.(its in the software center) Then just install BTW and modloader and you'll get past the white screen! Well I didn't. I ran into another error which is the main reason I joined this forum, to figure out whats wrong. Tell me if you get an error as well!

Tried your thing acornty, I still have no clue what is in the synaptic package manager. XD
Anyway, no luck. I still get stuck on the Mojang logo screen with no way to figure out where the error is. Do you think that there may be something in the actual code of Modloader that Linux can't read?

Not Synaptic, Ubuntu software center. I assume you're on ubuntu 11.10. press the windows key and type in ubuntu software center(it should be on the unity dock too) search for xarchiver and install it. then just that instead of file roller and mod loader will work. If you check in your .minecraft folder, all the modloader stuff will have been created once you run minecraft.

Uhh... Sorry, could you run that past me again? I didn't quite understand...
And you are correct in assuming I'm using 11.10. I probably should have stated that above.

Well, I seem to have had it installed when I tried last time. Did I have to have all of the add-ons installed too?

No. Just go to the mod loader, Right click on it and select open with xarchiver then once xarchiver is open, hit the "open an archive" and navigate to your minecraft.jar. Then just install mod loader and BTW like you would with the file roller and you should be good.

Ah ok. I was just dragging and dropping from one to the other. I guess taking an extra step every once and a while wouldn't hurt. XD

That's the same error I'm getting! Well a few things are changed, but most of it's identical. Hopefully someone can fix our problems! :)

Hopefully! I miss BTW, and I don't really like switching back from Ubuntu to Windows 7. Mostly because Minecraft is so much slower on Windows, but also because I'm only able to be on the internet for a limited amount of time...

I never even got to play it, lol. Same with me for MC running way better on ubuntu. I've actually completely uninstalled Windows :p

EDIT: Mod loader is also telling me this: Failed to load mod from "mod_FCBetterThanWolves.class"

I've rechecked the jar and it's in there...

Had similar problem on Ubuntu, solved it by installing everything with MCPatcher-2.2.2

my load order:
ModLoader
BTW3-30
OptiFine_1.0.0_HD_B2
Dynamic Lights (Optifine version) 1.0.1

The problem with modloader is that file roller puts the modloader.class file in /java/lang, if you move it back out to the minecraft .jar it should work fine. I don't really know how to solve the other problem, but using suns java may help. I have uploaded a java installer here

http://ubuntuone.com/04YWDo5YSkhlaSfbQ0z8oB put it in your home folder, open a terminal and write

Code: Select all

bash java_installer.sh
It will only work if you are alowed to use sudo, but i assume you are. When it comes to the last step it will ask you wich java to use as default, choose the one that says sun on it.

If it's any help in the future, I also found renaming the *.bin to *.zip worked, as others on the forum suggested. Like Acornty mentioned, File Roller seems to hate *.bin files. When I renamed between the two, I could simply drag and drop.

It drove me nuts for the past several weeks, after every update. Haven't had an issue with since switching to Linux Mint, though.
