Efficient Animal Killing Pits

Post by ThePowerofTower »

Recently, I've started using a new method of animal-killing on hunting trips that saves a lot of fat from my heiney. 4x4x2 Genocide pits!

I go to an area, right about at the middle of the inevitable group of animals, and I start pushing them, gingerly, into a pit. I imagine once I finally get some shears and a hoe on this world I'll really be in business. Then, once a majority of them are in the pit, I hop in and hack 'em up. While I may not necessarily save that much time doing this, I do spend significantly less energy just shoving these guys around and then standing in place hitting them.

This method actually started after Hardcore Hoofsies,

whenever I wanted to try and get early leather. I would stand as far from the pit as I can, swing, and then back up quickly to avoid getting bucked.
Does anyone use a similar or better method? What about general early-game cow killing? Any luck with vines, or is that too much work?

Surface ravines are fun. I spent part of the first day elbowing animals over the edge, rode a waterfall down to collect, and it rained wolf-chops for several nights. Growl. Thud. Yelp.

Early grain from a chest also works wonders for attracting fast food... but, yeah, pits are awfully efficient.

It occurs to me that as an abuse of hooves,

I once succumbed to full-on cheating and

used gravel to slaughter a herd of pitted cows for leather. IIRC successfully, though it was a really late night.

That is cruel, and inhumane, and inefficient, and unnecessarily complex.

I know what I'm building tomorrow :)

I tried that, actually.

I'd need to make the pit a little deeper to make good use of it. Pigs, literally, fly. I have an idea, though. If I make a pit with a dedicated cow-chine and some snowballs, I might be able to make an early slaughterpit. Could work with hostile mobs as well, seeing as cows can't buck other cows.

Imagine a cowmoat around your house with vine covering.
