Hardcore Buoy Spoiler Thread
Just making this as a place for people experimenting with the new stuff in 4.14 to discuss it.
Seems a big change has been made to items in water, and how they float. SCIENCE GO!

Re: Hardcore Buoy Spoiler Thread
Some of the items ive found float so far:
Seeds
Hemp seeds
Apples
Sticks
Wooden tools
Oak Logs
Oak Planks
Oak Sapling
Birch Sapling
Raw Chicken
Feather
Torch
Some of the things i've found don't float so far:
Cobblestone
Gravel
Dirt
Stone Tools
Iron Tools
Flint and Tinder
Clay Ball
Coal
Diamond
Iron Ore
Gold Ore
Iron Ingot
Seems like a useful mechanic for sure. :D

Re: Hardcore Buoy Spoiler Thread
Items that float seem to move a lot quicker in waterflows, and will not enter a hopper/crucible/etc. under the waterflow unless the height of the water flow is small enough for the item to come into contact with it.
EDIT: Okay. Waterflows are 8 blocks long, and floating items will not enter a hopper under the water stream until 6 or 7 (second or third block from the end of the waterflow) Depending on the bounce of the item, it will go farther or shorter. To make sure that floating items always go into a hopper under the water, put the hopper under the seventh block of the water flow.

This is interesting, I was wondering how using hopper filters on floating items was going to work. Another question: how do floating items interact with running into a block that is not full height at the end of a stream?darahalian wrote:... unless the height of the water flow is small enough for the item to come into contact with it. (I still need to figure out the exact height)

floating items will go into a hopper water at level 3 water

Re: Hardcore Buoy Spoiler Thread
First thing I tested, before this thread: All stone brick / smoothstone partial blocks will sink (as they should), EXCEPT smoothstone corners; Monty Python dictates that little tiny rocks shall float!
Also, windmill and waterwheel items float, as do gearboxes and axles. Pumps, however, do not. I would guess that is because they've got a heavy iron screw inside :p

Wool floats, but that was probably a given.

No, I think you guys may just be under the assumption that sinking or floating are the only two attributes an item can have ;)
Re: Hardcore Buoy Spoiler Thread
Screw Pump, Sinks in deep water and is pushed in shallow water.

Re: Hardcore Buoy Spoiler Thread
Well, this is interesting. Normal floating items will float along a waterstream until it becomes too shallow, and they start to drag, but pumps float at the same speed (which is faster than normal) the whole way, though they float lower down in the water, and will enter hoppers under the water at any level. Pumps will not fall down holes under flowing water, like normal heavy items, and will actually not get caught on the ledge of the hole like other floating items usually do.

They're close to neutrally buoyant... wow. Deep stuff, man :3
Of course, this means we have get to test everything in multiple environments, as they may react differently depending on throw vector, and water depth, and so forth.
Advanced physics in MY minecraft? It's more likely than you think. Side effects may include grinning like Igor, and throwing everything you own into a sufficiently large body of water.

I haven't actually had a chance to experiment yet, but based on all the things I have seen, it's pretty damn exciting. The fact that things will be disgorged at different times makes for some very interesting sorting mechanics, for auto-farms and the like.
All in all, pumped. Not sure now whether to play TL2, or more BTW.
All parts should go together without forcing. You must remember that the parts you are reassembling were disassembled by you. Therefore, if you can't get them together again, there must be a reason. By all means, do not use a hammer.
Re: Hardcore Buoy Spoiler Thread
I had an idea of building a water ladder using screwpumps to move items upwards, since they can be set up to create an upward flow in the water. However, while I could get some items to float upwards using source water blocks (but not screwpumps) in my singleplayer test world. I couldn't get it to work on my server, with either water source blocks or screwpumps. So I'm guessing this isn't the feature this was intended for...

My findings for mobtrap-filtration, assuming the items were allready in a waterstream.
- all iron tools/bars, gunpowder and dragon orbs are heavy enough to sink immediately, and will enter any hopper placed under the stream.
- spider eyes are not picked up at the first two spaces, they require a hopper at least two blocks from the "step" of a stream.
- (rotted) arrows, bones, rotten flesh, string and arcane scrolls ony enter hoppers at the lowest three water levels, so only at the absolute end of a water stream.

I can see clearly now my brain is gone.

Re: Hardcore Buoy Spoiler Thread
This is what I did for the last 2 or so hours. I think I got every item/block tested and categorized correctly. If anyone would like to add to it or fix something, please do so. I easily could have made a mistake after a while of doing it.

I changed it to a table, I think it's a little easier to see this way. Easy to revert though if people prefer it that way.

Am I the only one thinking about how the salt content of water interacts with specific gravity?
Kind of sad that gravel sinks after the "very small rocks" hint.

Haven't yet built my auto-reed farm, still manually harvesting.
Guys, reeds float in water now. Amazing.
