BTW-compatible Automated World Backups?

So this isn't really something I've looked into before, but since I now have a world I care about very, very much my paranoia is getting to me. :) Con someone recommend me a good utility for automatic world backups that works with BTW? Preferably one that keeps multiple backups - the more I can cust...

Re: Share Your Epic Fails

Well, my "luck" continues. Built another nether road, 500 blocks in a different direction. Made the portal. Hit ocean. Crap. Backed up 100 blocks. 3200 blocks in the overworld probably isn't far enough for villages, but it's a start. This time the portal hit land. Finally. Went through, tu...

Re: Share Your Epic Fails

...And my bad luck continues. Remember kids: ALWAYS put a roof over your animal farms. Some of you may recall in another post my being proud of putting the work into getting renewable ham & eggs going; that has been my primary food source for ages now. A stray lightning bolt just wiped out my en...

Re: Tips for Caving?

This took me a while to figure out: Shears are a godsend. Take the time to train your reflexes: If you see anything but a creeper, switch to your sword or bow. If you see a creeper, switch to your shears. It is immensely safer than any other way of dealing with them. Shears can also save your life i...

Share Your Epic Fails

Having just had one myself, I thought I'd start a threat for people to share their facepalm moments. So, doing fairly well in my current world, all the way up to crucible tech, so I decided it's time to finish the nether road I'd started earlier. Hours of work went into this 600-block path through t...

Re: Came back to BTW with strategies

My roommate and I spend basically our entire game so far working towards a single goal: Renewable ham and eggs. I am happy to say we recently achieved it, and it's definitely something worth working towards in the early-ish game. Sugar is really easy to grow in large numbers, and eggs of course are ...

Re: Just started to play the mod. I love it a lot, but there

Ya know, I'm with FC on this one. "Realism" has no place in gameplay. "Verisimilitude" is what is critical, and what BTW has in spades. EDIT: Ninja'd by Sarudak. Yeah, internal consistency is what matters. It's what people actually notice missing when they play a game. You can th...

Re: Viability of Lava Blade Mobtrap?

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm planning on building my mobtrap fairly early in the tech tree - I'm gonna use my first cauldron as the collector for it, so I will be a ways short of saws. It's sounding like most of the drawbacks can be worked around - the light and flammables are a non-issue since ...

Viability of Lava Blade Mobtrap?

So I'm lucky enough in my current world to have surface lava right near my base, with a nearby lake well above the level of the lava. As such, I'm considering using a lava blade as the killing point of my mobtrap. I've never built such a trap before, and I was wondering if it has any major shortcomi...

Re: XCOM: Enemy Within.

Well, have been playing Enemy Within a fair bit and really enjoying it. I think the thing I'm noticing most, more than the MECs and Gene Mods and new foes, is the polish. The interface is ~worlds~ better, with a bunch of little bugs and glitches and annoyances fixed. There's a button to auto-unequip...

Re: Security!

I go for the time consuming but completely secure method: I build walls. 5-block high dirt walls with crenelations, battlements, an exterior lip to block spiders, and a few windows placed for observation. And then I curse loudly every time an Enderman teleports into my compound and nearly kills me. ...

Re: Terraria PC update apparently in the works, due Mayish.

Yeah, there's definitely some awesome new hardmode content. I think my favorite is the Tiki armor. My g/f adores it - she uses the full armor plus both the accessories, and it's hilariously awesome to see her little mob of pygmies swarm over anything that gets close to her. :) Plus the "flying&...

Re: Terraria PC update apparently in the works, due Mayish.

Well, while I certainly share FC's and other's concerns with the early game changes, I do have this to say about the update: It has completely fixed my problems with Hardmode. Previously, Hardmode was a grind to get Hallowed Armor, and then... that's it. Congrats, you have teh best armor evar. No ch...

Re: Best use for early game pistons.

Honestly I think the most useful thing would be an auto-hemp farm on a decay timer. There comes a point in the mid game where you need a LOT of hemp, and I find that having it on an auto-farm as early as possible is very handy. Plus, surplus of seeds = surplus of eggs = not starving to death. :) An ...

QUADRUPLETS?! (...Spoilers...?)

So... unsure if this is bug or feature. Was playing a lan game with my g/f (latest version) when she cracked open an egg and out came FOUR baby chickens. o.O Never seen anything like it before... They were definitely all from the same egg - it looked like one chicken until it seperated, and she only...

Re: X-COM Long War Mod

~shrug~ Personal preference thing, I guess. I find the strategic choices in Long War both more difficult and more rewarding compared to base X-Com. The forced abduction choice was always something I disliked about vanilla X-Com; obviously it works for you. YMMV, as usual.

Re: X-COM Long War Mod

I think that more than being arbitrary in that it's unrealistic, it's arbitrary in that its fake difficulty. It's "no matter what you do, panic goes up". Could be a personal preference thing, but I much prefer Long War's system of "panic goes up when you make mistakes". I like fe...

Re: X-COM Long War Mod

Actually the "only one abduction mission" thing is really important because panic is really, really sticky in Long War. Very few things cause panic to rise (mostly fucking up in major ways) but it's also really hard to lower panic. If you were guaranteed a panic increase in two countries e...

Re: Best biome to settle in. (SPOILERS)

My biome-settling choice is typically influenced by one thing only: I ~hate~ having to deal with storms re: windmills.

So I don't really care what biome my main base is - as long as it's not jungle - but I will almost always settle on the border between another biome and desert.

I think what really sold the mod for me was, on my third or something run-through, Dr Vahlan was giving her usual speech about not using explosives and I instantly thought, "Fuck you, I want to WIN this war". And proceeded to grenade the crap out of everything. And then proceeded to wince ...

X-COM Long War Mod

Just tried out this mod recently and it has completely gotten me re-addicted to X-Com. It actually kinda feels almost like "Better Than X-Com" in that the creator seems to have a really solid grasp on rewarding gameplay. I got through X-Com on Classic/Ironman without ever having a particul...
