Re: Your favorite games of all time list

I'm probably a little younger than most members of the forum (only 27 here), but here's some of mine. StarCraft: I grew up in the 90's, and I first played Starcraft off a spawn some guy my mom was dating at his office LAN party. He burned me a copy and I played it for years until my computer messed ...

Solace?

Came across this: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bigkittygames/solace-crafting-distance-based-fantasy-survival-rp in my facebook feed earlier today. What do you guys think? Does $13-15 seem reasonable for what's already on the table? Do you think this guy can handle the development? How simila...

Re: Book Recommendations?

I don't always agree with his politics, but I've never read a Heinlein story I didn't like. Kim Stanley Robinson is always good as well, despite his few books. Also, I don't know how many of you read the old Animorphs series as a child, but all of them are freely available in E-Book format with the ...

Re: Steam Sales

it's not steam, but, the current humble bundle has Pony Island available free of charge. It's one of the most inspirational games I've seen in recent years, so I would recommend everyone here pick up a copy. (it's at the bottom of the page) For the price of a dollar, though, you can get a bunch of e...

Re: [WIP] Kyzer's Cold North Texture Pack

I know suggestions are the bane of any creator, but could you make the blue edges on the diamond a tad brighter? I get that you're going for the diamond edged iron, but it's a bit difficult to tell the difference between iron and diamond at a glance. I'm also really a fan of the Isabella texture pac...

Re: Vanilla Minecraft News Discussion

So... yeah... this is a thing: http://www.minecraftforum.net/news/60608-mojang-hires-pixel-artist I know FC's not really an artist, but he knows how to stick to the distinct look of the base game. Rather than fixing the ugly textures of all the new material released post-notch (Acacia makes my eyes ...

Re: Thank You.

I'd just like to add my name to the list of thanks. I'm not quite as far as the others' here, though I've also been pursuing game design myself (one more semester until I transfer to really get started). All the same, I've really learned a lot from FlowerChild's posts on design, industry terms, and ...

Re: 4x Games

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm still relatively new to the genre, as the ones I've listed are the only 4x games I've played, so older games are also definitely worth looking into. I've also heard many good things about M.U.L.E. in both developer interviews and from some light research, but I do...

4x Games

I started playing 4x games about 2 years ago with the rather lightweight Endless Space, before moving on the Civilization V, Galactic Civilization III, and more recently Stellaris. While I've enjoyed elements of each of them, I'd like to know which games in the genre everyone here is more interested...

Re: Better than Wolves Measurements

If you don't mind borrowing from other cultures, a Li is about a third of a mile, but was originally meant to refer to the length of a village. If you take the average size of a village from minecraft wiki, 32 blocks, then 64 blocks would be 2 Li . Alternatively, 64 blocks could be taken as a Li sin...

Re: Better than Wolves Measurements

Perhaps a unit of 8 squares can be referred to as a cubit?
The term's mostly fallen out of use in the real world, but it makes for a nice pun on both the cubical shape of blocks and the fact 8 is a bit (2 states) to the third power.

Re: Choosing a Cell Phone, Help

I'm still in the pre-smartphone dark ages, but I have a Samsung Rugby II that's probably the last generation of flip phones to be manufactured. It's not good for anything besides calls, but it could survive me throwing it against the wall and looks nicer than a nokia.

Re: Better than Wolves Measurements

64 blocks a as a "stack" and 16 blocks as a "chunk-length" seem fairly appropriate measurements using base mechanics. The important thing is that a unit of measurement be easy to measure and has practical value in its use. An acre originally referred to the amount of land a singl...

Re: Slime-proofing tips pls?

A year or two back I believe someone did a test-concept pigman farm using a ton of nether portals and the occasional spawning mechanic they used. It was determined to be highly inefficient and a massive drain on server resources. IIRC, FC killed it to remove the unpredictability and to discourage pe...

Re: Early-game mushroom farming?

Mushroom Farms in My SSP I use these slab-based farms to grow mushrooms. all run on a single seed mushroom in the middle. There are 5-6 of them in my underground farming terrace. I call them Pillboxes (since they resemble pillboxes when made with a roof). Most of them are on different floors. That'...

What are you on about? Bootsies aren't a conspiracy. You make em put the lotion on first and it's all fine. Re: D&D style games

I agree with some of that. 4e was rather weak when it came to pre-published story material, though there were some Unearthed Arcana type things released through Dragon to encourage more roleplaying here and there. That said, I disagree with 3.5 being terrible, as in the end, each edition is a differ...

Re: D&D style games

If the roleplaying aspect of RPGs is something that you value, I recommend giving 5e a shot (table top not Sword Coast legends). Demphasizing combat and encouraging story-telling and roleplaying was a major design goal. You mean versus 4E? Because the RP aspect of 4E is identical to 5E, no? I thoug...

Re: D&D style games

Weirdly enough, for all the (imo incorrect) whining that 4th Edition plays like a video game, there have been no 4E games. Not entirely accurate. The current MMORPG Neverwinter is based off of 4e, your basic attacks are based on 4e's at-wills, the quick-recharge abilities off encounter powers, and ...

Re: How to dung farm?

I worry that this may be unintended as it is rather too easy, if clever. Credit to a friend: Put the fox wolves in the henhouse. Let them go feral. Enjoy a low-tech, auto-feeding, zero-waste dung farm that as a bonus produces feathers. Start with enough chickens that this predation won't endanger y...

Yhetti: Stumping doesn't work on trees already placed in the world before the update That aside, Stumping is something I've sort of expected based on old posts. Stump Remover seems like a good device to encourage pre-brewing collection of red mushrooms and another use for oysters besides fishing and...

I've been stuck outside on the new moon on a respawn and got killed pretty much nonstop til dawn, so I don't think it affects mobs.
