Re: Auto-kiln build help

A timer based system is simpler, generally more reliable and self starting. My current uses 2 BD and 2 redstone, one RS torch and reuses the bellows timer. Depending on number of hibachis, can work with as few as 2 nonredstone items in the timer BD and a solid block that doesn't respond to kiln in t...

I think FC won't like Grum's last tweet a bit ... Erik Broes ‏@_grum 2h I think I just did the biggest refactor in Minecraft history, 222 commits, 379 files changed, 25023 lines of diffs. Breaks all the things! https://twitter.com/_grum 100+ lines of diff per commit on average? Maybe java is a bit ...

Re: Mapping in BTW

I also discovered the joy of mapmaking after HCS. I figured out a way to make my maps pretty much line up, despite the lack of coordinates. I go to the exact corner of my first map and make a new "placeholder" map. I don't fill this one in; I just go to each corner and use it as the start...

Re: Hardcore Spawn - The Joy of Starting Over

There are three separate continents I've identified in the world in question. At this point, I'm pretty familiar with all of them and I can find out pretty quickly which one I'm on. Then I know which direction to strike out in to find the continent that has my base. Perhaps it may work for that wor...

Re: Hardcore Spawn - The Joy of Starting Over

First time I died, I built up to having a compass. By time had it, had a ton of dirt so just made a packed dirt road back to spawn. Was a nice sense of accomplishment. Since then, I've got pack dirt roads all over the place. Though I built most of them while not HC spawned as it's a whole lot easier...

I've been debating whether it'd be worth the risk to release blight into jungles with the new changes. For now, I just avoid them.

Well, sounds like it's time to setup those dedicated animal pens and move away from the big pit that's right below the portal. And the chicken farm. And the wolf crappery. Oh, and definitely squirrel away breeding pairs of everything in obsidian vaults in case of zombie infestation. I'm surprised no...

It does work for regular wolves, I have not tried with you-know-what but I would doubt it would. It would be amusing if it did work though.

Re: Flower's Dev Diary (Week of July 22nd)

Lapis stays exciting until you have your maxed out lapis beacon(s). Diamond is almost the same way, but it taking so much longer to get enough diamonds for it oddly makes the individual diamond ore finds less satisfying as there's not much in the way of appreciable progress towards a new beacon level.

Forest fires

I've found lately a deep love for setting fire to the forest as I'm exploring. It clears out shade for mobs to hide in during the day, opens sight lines, is way faster than cutting by ax, leaves a much easier place to build a road, and leaves a pretty clear marker that someone went through there in ...

Sounds awesome. I think this will definitely make an autokiln be the go to for me for those first 2 block dispensers. All the latest updates definitely seem to be putting the mine back in Minecraft. Particularly the redstone changes. I'm getting to automation point and I'm having to balance redstone...

Also note, soul sand hoppers can hold regular xp orbs too so you can stick a powered soul sand hopper at the beginning and pass the xp orbs off to a completely separate water flow for storage. I always put a catch all filterless hopper at the end of the line to catch anything missed and those pesky ...

Re: Better Wolves Spoiler thread

I was curious, I've had tamed wolves of another player start attacking me after I attacked a wild wolf in their presence. Wasn't sure if this was bug or intended behavior given the now shifty and untrustworthy nature of bootie-less wolves.

Re: Onto the topic of Landmarks

packed dirt half slabs, cheap, stands out nicely and useful for a road. by the time you've gathered enough iron/redstone for a compass after a respawn, you should have a few stacks of packed dirt and paving the way back to your spawn is a good way to ensure you'll never get truly lost in that area a...

Re: Trap Doors: Have I gone too far?

I haven't used trap doors since the piston was introduced. I forget the recipe even until I need one for filtering. I tend to build one per world, for the mobtrap filter and then promptly forget about it again. I was using two redstone powered fence gates only because it seemed stylistically more fi...

Re: Incredibly useful early-game builds

2 deep moat on either side of base/cave/tunnel exit, trapdoor drawbridge optional. Avoids those ambushes from the sides by creepers. Later, top the exit with a wall of some sort that the mobs can't jump over so no more death from above surprises either. Obviously this doesn't deal with the spiders b...

Re: Anyone using tripwire hooks and what for?

Why do you need to detect mobs in a mob farm? Piston based drop traps. They kill the mobs really fast after spawn so the total number of mobs alive at any point remains low keeping the spawn rate high. I've never found it useful in survival. By the time I've got enough resources to make one, I've a...

Re: Advice for a Newb?

The despawning thing only applies to items they pick up in the world iirc - stuff they spawn with doesn't count. Even that though means that some of the dropped items they pick up extends the pickup time. Completely anecdotal, but it feels like I get more drops with the living version than the othe...

Re: Advice for a Newb?

Out of curiosity, which mob drops in particular are you going after with the above approach? Mostly creeper oysters, but that rare shovel or sword is more than half the reason for leaving them alive. I've heard that mobs carrying something don't despawn... though I haven't gone so far as to test th...

Re: Advice for a Newb?

To clarify, I wasn't suggesting it for long term but only for that period before getting something to auto collect the drops from a full kill drop. As soon as I have a hopper, I swap to a full drop kill trap. And then saw kills when I get enough iron/leather to spare for a second saw. All in all, it...
