I'm loving screw pumps and I've lately been finding myself using them for much more than just horizontal water movement. Forking streams where the water doesn't naturally fork(doable without pumps, but needs fixing every time there's a water outage), forking streams from item channels, or just sligh...

Just put the tunels at the lava level +1. It's rather hard to miss as most lava pools in that depth are at the same height.
