Take a platform, and put an anchor on it. Add 2 platform in every direction. That's a 5x5 platform, and that's the maximum size a signle anchor can lift.
So if you have 4 blocks between each platform, you can lift a longer structure without gap.

Hah, thanks walker. Right-clicking would bring up a HUD that would change how quickly the clock turns, and how often a redstone signal is sent. FC would never introduced something like that. He wants to stick to the vanilla spirit, and you can't find any complex GUI in the game. And it wouldn't fit...

Yeah, just disengage the GB closest to your windmill with your combo redstone+detector, and everything will be protected from the storm.
