Windmill will give you power, but you will lack the transport that water supplies, so you can't really make anything automatic or even semi automatic. You could make a much more efficient factory on the surface, and process your netherack there.

You don't aim in a volley. You point your bow in the general direction of an army and let loose. Since the plates present the larger surface area, the arrow is more likely to hit the plate than not.
