Hi, chickens only breed with chicken feed, independently of hunger.
Animals need tons of space (and yes, cows eat the most, chickens the least) so it's normal that you can keep only a couple alive. Later you can feed them with straw and other items, or use grass conveyor belts.

Hi, pigs need a lot of grass because they eat it until it's dirt. Other passive mobs will choose to eat full grass instead of sparse grass, so you got to give them a lot of space, probably like 6x6 (don't quote me on that) for just the first pig.
