Re: Lightning rod protection
Lightning rods definitely do (and always have) fully protect everything in a certain radius around them, since the game only checks for a lightning rod after choosing the final location to strike. A single cobble pillar is still not sufficient, this has been noted on github https://github.com/BTW-Co...

Re: Removal of incredibly easy-access to cheats
Here's the full story as I understand it: RTH was originally intended to be part of BTW that would serve as new post-endgame content. It would be a separate dimension that would be unlocked using steel and fortresses. (At this point it wasn't called RTH yet, but referred to as the "anniversary ...

Re: Grass roofs are lame, but feel necessary
I'd say the balance feels good to me in the part of the game I've reached so far. Having a small pen with a few chickens is no problem. Building a nice big pen for cows was a pretty significant undertaking, but it felt like a nice project to work on and well worth the effort for the reward of having...

Re: How to survive the night in the newest versions?
My preferred strategy is to dig into the side of a hill. If you've only watched videos so far, my advice is: don't be scared, just try it out! No shame in dying a few times until you figure out something that works for you :)

Igloos?
In version 4.ABCDEFPotato, we had the following change: Added a whole new set of snow blocks that serve as an early game building material. The details of these are left to the player to discover, but one thing to note is that you can build out sideways with them if proper care is taken. Old snow bl...

Re: [CommunityPatch] List of current BTW features that should be addressed in a community patch
And a final one that doesn't really fit the theme but that has been bothering me a lot : the dichotomy between villager trading being the perfect incentive to incite players to make big automated farms, yet the most important blocks needed for those projects are gated after you went to the end, aft...

Re: Early Game Difficulty and Hardcore Spawns
One sentiment that FC would regularly express about Hardcore Spawn is that even if you die, you've still made progress because now you have a partially built-up base that you could find in the future, the "persistent roguelike" aspect. Personally I really like that - if we're going to make...

Thanks for everything FC. I was never much of an active participant here but I always checked up on the forums at least once every week or two. I could say a lot more about the effect that you and this community have had on me but I'm not great with words so I'll just leave it at: thank you, and bes...

Re: Blasting oil in vogue?
Huh, I didn't even realize you could get dynamite pre-end, because of the need for gunpowder. The crafting tree to make explosives was always complicated enough that I never bothered to learn all the recipes (and also explosives not really being required for anything in the tech tree). I'll have to ...

Re: Question about fishing (spoilers)
Ah, randomness. Driving people crazy and fueling crackpot theories since the beginning of video games. Don't listen to FC - the fishing rate is really determined by your IRL timezone and your CPU core temperature, and you can guarantee you'll catch that pokemon if you hold your Gameboy upside down a...

BTW Memories, 9th anniversary edition
Since it's almost that time of year again, I thought it'd be fun to share some of our favorite BTW memories like we have in years past. My first experience with BTW was back in MC beta 1.6, a couple months after BTW's initial release, and I'm pretty sure I tried to add it to my very first Minecraft ...

Re: Witchfarm Design
I can't help you with any of the specifics (never built a with farm myself), but regarding spawns: Added the ability for witches to spawn in swamps. They will spawn in darkness around and above sea level in swamp biomes and this replaces their witch hut spawns, making swamps slightly more dangerous ...

Re: Jungle Spider Trap
It's possible that the trap just isn't big enough. I did some testing of spawn rates several months ago when Whuppee was building a jungle spider trap on his stream and having problems getting spawns. As far as I know spawning mechanics haven't changed since then. The problem is that jungle spiders ...

Re: Animal enclosure builds
I'm a little confused by your description - if the interior is 5x5, wouldn't that make the whole thing 7x7, not 6x6? And when you say the fence perimeter was grass, do you mean there are grass blocks under the fence blocks?

Re: [SPOILER] Help with sustainable food
thats the problem...my cow has a 15x9 area...and still starving =s Does the area have grass in it still? If so, the cow isn't starving to death - must be getting killed by zombies. If not, then it just needs to be bigger. Also keep in mind that milking the cow makes it need to eat more, so whether ...

Re: Vanilla Minecraft News Discussion
Speaking of the Minecraft forum, I just came across this announcement from a few months ago... yikes. Not sure if people around here knew about that, but I don't remember any discussion about it. Guessing that probably has something to do with the decision to kill it altogether.

Re: New Release! (BTW 4.ABCFEFE) - NO SPOILERS
Merry christmas, thanks FC! Changing mob spawns to be based on material seems like such an elegant solution, and totally fits with previous mob spawning behavior (slimes+nether mobs). Glad to see the end of slabbing :) Also just to confirm, mobs should be able to spawn inside of all collision-less b...

Re: [Spoiler request] progression to The End - How?
It was spelled out pretty clearly in the change logs a few versions back. The summary is: Dormant soulforges can be found in nether fortresses, or crafted out of gold (but crafting them requires a 4x4 grid already, so you'll have to scavenge your first one). Dormant soulforges can be turned into sou...
