Ouch, that's rough. You can prevent this in the future by using the new minecraft launcher (get the latest Minecraft.exe from Mojang) and setting up a separate profile for BTW with a different directory. I'm on the new launcher but you need to quit the game and reload before switching worlds. This ...

If I may make a suggestion, since you said you're near desert, desert and plains, why not go for L shaped skylights and keep it shallow? Nothing from a desert will get through a 1 block hole, but it'll keep the gloom at bay until you get torches.

Actually the cactus thing isn't a terrible idea if you dig yourself down by one block. That way most mobs can't get you, if a skeleton does luck out you don't get cactus speared and you can survive until morning.

Mining when you've run out of food, now THAT's a terrible idea... :P

Or Do the same with an x-ray texture pack....but I think it's just bad luck. I've never had a problem anyway.
