Re: Oxygen Not Included - by Klei
Just a quick warning to you guys, the rockets are known to be notoriously buggy. We're talking about astronauts coming back and leaving all skill progress behind. Or actually not coming back at all. So it might be wise to postpone the rocket part as long as possible. And if someone here finds a way ...

Re: Space Engineers revisited
I've had a look at those two and sadly the ship simulation of both of them is not even closely comparable. Interstellar rift has only rudamentary ship damage (Healthbars for systems) and Pulsar doesn't have any ship building at all. So no, that particular niche seems uncontested. You really had my h...

Space Engineers revisited
A couple days back I had a new look into Space Engineers. Well, what to say, Keen still didn't make a real game out of it. Still more or less Sandbox. But now comes the but. It seems the games blocks and systems are engineery enough, that some people actually were able to make sort of a game out of ...

For all sci-fi fans on the forum and those that understand some basic physics.
No far out srange warp drive sci fi from me this time. Something a little more substantial.
Watch it, try to grasp what is going on, let it sink in.

-snip- I used trapping for a while, but it actually isn't as powerful as it seems at first. There are other ways to start a fire without using a lighter which are available for all characters. Trapping is just the easiest and most convenient way. Same goes for ranged. I actually finished the game w...

Re: Neo Scavenger
I'm glad you're trying it again. Makes for a very nice game inbetween. It's nothing big but good at what it does. I personally like the roguelike elements very much. Especially in conjunction with the "level-ups" you get from your growing knowledge about the game from run to run. The start...

Re: CRISPR / CAS9
-snip- No worries man, you did a great job at staying objective. The thing about not being able to indentify crispr modified cells is still an issue. While older techniques left traces in any case, as it was just part of the technique, it was a no brainer to find out if a cell had been modified. Cr...

Now I'm disappointed. One and a half year and not one mention of this wonderful game. If you liked BTW, you will like this one. Hardcore roguelike survival. For maximum enjoyment, never look at a wiki and prepare a pen and paper. You will probably die within two days on your first run by something o...

Re: CRISPR / CAS9
Actually, the old laws for GMO won't tackle CRISPR for several reasons. First, older techniques were crude, left virus DNA in the modified cells and there has been no way to control where the inserted gene would end up. It was just incorporated at some random point of the DNA, potentially leading to...

Re: CRISPR / CAS9
This is a long one, first part is technical stuff that shows how unlikely it is what is happening (basically outpacing moores law for genetics a couple of decades), the second part is more interesting for everyone and a point everyone really needs to think about. I turn here with the discussion beca...

Re: CRISPR / CAS9
-snip- Depends on where you see the puzzle. XKCD set it at biology as a whole. If you see it as genetic engineering, we are there. We can read, write, copy, paste, activate, deactivate, regulate and do some other pretty scary things with DNA with ease right now. And the mention of the optimization ...

Re: CRISPR / CAS9
Not worried. We have been modifying genes for a very long time now (unwittingly or unknowingly but still). Dont expect to see genetic fashion modifications or supersoldiers programs anytime soon. Its probable that this tecnology will be used for medical, engineering or farming purposes, think clone...

Re: CRISPR / CAS9
That is actually true. It's just the last piece of the puzzle to make the picture whole. But I guess that is the reason why it is so big. Everything is there now, a complete toolbox. Nevertheless, Crispr is used to improve Crispr, it's a self accelerating discovery. At least for the moment things ar...

Re: CRISPR / CAS9
Not with your technique. With Crispr you can. Well, with quiet some work, but you can do it. Removing some genetic defect or curing cancer is a lot simpler than creating completly new life forms it seems. edit: Oh yeah, right, leukemia "cured" last august in london in a one year old girl b...

Re: CRISPR / CAS9
Thats what I meant. What you posted is a science fiction story. What I wrote up there is true. It sounds like science fiction. It is not.
We're talking about it being used right now. We're talking about cancer (in that particular case leukemia) being most likely cured.
I said it is unbelievable.

Well, you won't believe it, as it is unbelieveable. Stay nevertheless. I want to know what you guys think about the implications of the "news". Basically genetic engineering just got super easy, super cheap, super precise and super fast. (Actually it happened 2012 but in december of last y...

Re: Hololens and its applications.... discuss
IMO, VR and AR are similar, but one isn't a subset of another. Just like you could theoretically block out your vision and use an AR device for VR, you could mount cameras to the front of a VR device and layer things over what they show for AR. In fact, that's essentially what Microsoft does for th...

Re: Hololens and its applications.... discuss
As far aa I can tell AR is superior to VR as VR is a subset of AR. You should be able to emulate VR with the hololens by blacking out the view to the real world and display only the virtual components in your view. I don‘t think hololens is designed to do that, but it should be able to without redes...

Hololens and its applications.... discuss
I do not want to derail the vanilla minecraft discussion so i start something new here. What do you guys think the hololens will be used for? What kind of applications will we see? What "new" kinds of genres will arise? I start with making some predictions for the gaming sector. It is like...

Re: Vanilla Minecraft News Discussion
As far as I know there is no noticable delay between screen reaction and head movement. The only thing that gives the holograms away is, that they appear brighter than their surroundings. that might be by design though. I think it was an obvious move from microsoft to get MC for their hololens. The ...

More like a distant relationship. The economic part is complex but not the main part of the game. There are far less ressources and almost all are available globally. I played distant worlds as, but found it to be rather unresponsive in its mechanics. it works and is good for some very long games, but i felt some of its mechanics are just meh and it is absolutely unsuited for mp games. take the fuel of distant worlds for example. your ships always do the same dam...

The genre is nothing I usually see here, but the game is still worth a mention. For all those that like 4x and feel the titles coming up and out are somwhat stale, there is help. i found a mod changing the ressource distribution most enjoyable http://www.factorioforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=4761 it basically gives you some starting ressources and distributes everything else very far apart and very rich, often guarded by nests. I found trains in this setup to be ...

Re: Medieval Engineers
The level of complexity is actually far lower than it looks in the first place. The structural integrity seems to rely solely on z-forces. I can't see any tensile strengh simulation. Also, the parts seem to have pre defined break points, you can see it in the section with the statues. They seem to u...
