I've been having trouble getting past the iron > diamond hump because of the sheer dangers of caving. I tend to only mine at night when spawns are lowest, with a mix of wool/leather armor. A suggestion if you are taking them: Sacks. Works like a single chest, except the top texture changes with whatever is in the top let block. It may just remain as gravel normally, but possible options could be: Sand, Gravel, Dirt, Wheat, Bones, Rotten Meat, String, Wool, Vegies etc.
