No, I did it right. I left out the auw, avg and jw class files when installing Optifine AFTER BTW. I tried both Optifine Ultra B2 and Optifine Ultra B3 and they both caused the same error.

For some reason, after installing the latest version of BTW and re-installing Optifine, I keep getting a message whenever I try to join a server telling me I have an outdated client.
