Actually the method for making perfectly concaved lenses is much more low tech then you think. It's really just grinding two pieces of glass together in a circular motion over a long period of time. That's how some of the earlier "big" telescope lenses were created.

Im preparing a new 1.0 world myself. After finding 2 cave spider spawners and 1 spider spawner that are all within 16 blocks of each other im not changing worlds for a long time.

well i consider it a vague concept rather than a recipe. If you want to get technical automation is "fluff" itself. You dont need automation, but it is a great time saver and makes things alot easier. automation comes with a cost of time and material though to make that fluff harder to get...

as an added idea the cement could also be non pickable by endermen since each block would be linked together with the iron bars. I dont know what blocks endermen can't pick up but everything i like to build with they can completely destroy

Um TNT destroys a 3x3x3 area of smoothstone actually which leaves lots of room for damage reduction.
