Re: Better Than Starting Manned (Flower's WIP KSP mod )

I totally get the "Under pressure" thing. There's a reason I chose to talk about this here instead of, say, in the KSP forums. There's no way I would start a theory discussion somewhere outside the "safe zone." And I'm totally not commenting on BTSM, but on KSP in general. Given ...

Re: Better Than Starting Manned (Flower's WIP KSP mod )

Oh, sorry. It is indeed pie in the sky idealism. Mostly I was trying to say that the people who want progression in a creative, sandbox style game have NO IDEA what they actually want, and thus can't be pleased. I personally thing they're asking for the wrong specific thing in response to their gene...

Re: Better Than Starting Manned (Flower's WIP KSP mod )

Well, ok, I think a large part of it is that having features you've been using put behind a tech node paywall or whatever doesn't feel like progress. When people say "I want progression" in a creative game, what they really mean is they want a sense of progress. To the early release and DL...

Re: Vanilla Minecraft News Discussion

You know, this conversation is giving me the impression more people really need to watch this film: (Snip) I think it is extremely useful when considering the motivations of corporations (especially huge publicly traded ones) to keep in mind that they don't really think like or act like (most) peop...

Re: It's Finally Happened: I'm modding Civ 5

By default there isn't. There is a way to grant the ability to build a road to a specific unit type, but there isn't a way by default to make a promotion that does the same thing to any unit. If it was as simple as that I wouldn't need any assistance. But since the tag exists to do it for a unit, ob...

Yeah, that's pretty much what I want. So you think CanBuild is a query, not a command?

Re: It's Finally Happened: I'm modding Civ 5

Thank you all kindly. Basically, what I'm trying to accomplish is creating a promotion that allows the unit to build roads and forts. Like the Roman legion UU, except I want it to carry over when the unit is upgraded. This is going to be part of the Earthbender UU. The problem is, the XML tables hav...

Re: It's Finally Happened: I'm modding Civ 5

OH my fucking GOD I am so frustrated. I cannot post to the Civfanatics Mod forums to ask questions. I'm registered, but "I don't have permission to post." There is ZERO indication of what I have to do to gain permission. There is a small line in the registration saying that new members are...

Re: It's Finally Happened: I'm modding Civ 5

Give me a few weeks. I'm not gonna share anything unless I think it's Rock Solid, and I'm not hurrying with it. Right now I've got 3 out of 4 nations working as intended, but I have to do some major coding on the 4th to work around a hard-coded issue in the game. Then I have to play it myself, sever...

It's Finally Happened: I'm modding Civ 5

I just wanted to share that this is happening here, because I've had several conversations here about modding in general where I stated that I'd likely try it at some point, but hadn't found a need to yet. Well, It's happened. I started messing around with Mods for Civ 5 this weekend, and I found on...

Re: Tip for people that want work in the games industry

If you ever have some free time, you might want to play around with creating a 3D level for an MP FPS or something (the "Quake Level" I mentioned above). It can be an interesting 3D thought exercise in organizing something almost akin to traffic patterns. Oddly enough, the first Computer ...

Re: Tip for people that want work in the games industry

I love your architect analogy, because I am an architect. Which is probably why I instinctively understand your design philosophy. I've also had to do a lot of 3d rendering. I've often wondered if my architecture education would translate well into being a level designer. But there aren't many game ...

Re: Odd vs even

This is the sort of thing I OBSESS over. What I've concluded is that a 10 x 10 x 4 grid is the basic unit of minecraft design. What you get is a 9x9x3 room, with a 1x3 entrance. This room is perfectly sized for most early stage builds. Especially underground farming, which is how I first arrived at ...

Re: KSP Resource System Set Aside / Multiplayer Added

I certainly can't speak from a Developer's perspective, except in the most armchair sense. I trust you to choose the right approach for your development. As a Consumer, I've become skeptical of purchasing products that follow this model. I'm no longer willing to shell out money for a game that's not...

Yes, having a contrarian at the helm Helps. But really, you've never really been making a game for us. You've been making a game for you, and graciously allowing us to play it. Actually, you're playing a second game one tier up, where our reactions to your game is the game. Fucking Skinner-boxcrafte...

Re: KSP Resource System Set Aside / Multiplayer Added

It has become increasingly clear to me that the minecraft model of game development is a flawed one. That is, letting people buy the incomplete product early, then giving incremental updates until you reach an arbitrary "finished" point, leads to bad games. 1: Too much community input too ...

God, this is hitting me so hard. I had a fight this weekend with my son, over a report card. It's the stupidest thing ever. It's not even a bad report card. Re: Inspired to Build in Late Game

Well, that depends greatly on why you're playing to begin with. Me, I've never been to the end of the tech tree. Not once. Not because I die or get bored or anything. Rather, I only advance my tech level when it seems necessary to do so to complete a project I'm working on already. In my longest hel...

Re: Better Than Starting Manned (Flower's WIP KSP mod )

I tried remotetech alongside BTSM this weekend. I couldn't even get it off the ground, because the default antenna you get at tech 1 needs to be extended to be used, and you can't extend it unless you have control of the craft. Which is pretty much what I was expecting, but I laughed anyway. For eve...

Re: Managing security at bases

I used to use trap doors as drawbridges and folding staircases, but since zombies started attacking trap doors it became harder to do that. I still do a setup with a deep pit in front of my door, with a trap door that opens up on "my" side. I've yet to have a zombie reach across the moat t...
