Re: Vanilla Minecraft News Discussion

Seriously 1.14 has problems. Anyone playing vmc, wait on it. I don't actually play vMC, but do check out some youtube figures from time to time and boy were you right. A guy playing on the 'Hermitcraft' server spent two 30 minute episodes attempting to update his server without ruining everything, ...

Re: Looking for help with the early game

It seems like you're trying to take too much too early, and as a result are expending too much energy collecting resources you don't need yet. Consider that you can realistically cook at most two food items on your first night, so there is no real point to chasing down more animals or collecting mor...

Re: Vanilla Minecraft News Discussion

Is it just me, or does it seem like Mojang is slowly and poorly implementing BTW into vanilla minecraft? Previous updates added hoppers, BUDs and DBs, while this current update added a weak-ass campfire that can't even start fires and a saw that can process blocks into their partial equivalents (e.g...

Re: Despawn range of hostile mobs (Slimes) near original spa

I don't think this warrants its own post, but spiders too don't seem to despawn when they're targeting prey. As a consequence there is a small population of spiders permanently hanging out at my base, controlled primarily by stray shots from skeletons. Since I doubt that this is an intended outcome ...

Re: Progression of tools [some spoilers, maybe]

Even your own thread title here indicates uncertainty over whether such details are already known to people or not, so you seem to simultaneously be saying "this wasn't obvious" and "I suspect everyone knows this" :) Anyways, suffice to say that I hear you, and I even agree with...

Progression of tools [some spoilers, maybe]

I had some difficulty figuring out the order of progression for the early game tools and feel it is somewhat counterintuitive. The fact that the pointy stick is your first digging tool and can be used both on stone and coal, combined with the idea that the sharpened rock is more of a cutting impleme...

Re: Book Recommendations?

For something completely different, I would like to recommend the novel Beyond Sleep (Nooit Meer Slapen). It is as far as I'm concerned W.F. Herman's greatest work*, an incredibly slow-paced introspective trip with a degree of paranoid intensity that I can only describe as "2001: A Space Odysse...

Re: Hardcore Stumping (Spoiler Thread)

Can't stump the president elect. No no no no no no no. Just no. "Stumping" is the process of traveling around the country making speeches during the campaign season. You constantly hear it being referred to as "on the stump" when they give such a speech. No reference to any part...

Re: Hardcore Stumping (Spoiler Thread)

So I'm confused, is there any gameplay aspect to stumps aside from making you feel like the tree hugging hippies may have had a smidgen of a point? Supposed to make you aware of your environment, since it restricts the amount of land you can clear for building in the early game, as well as slightly...

Re: RimWorld Alpha 16 – Wanderlust released!

So far I've been playing it and I haven't felt the urge to form a caravan, it seems as a huge risk with a little potential reward - you could get some good items in trade, provided the target colony has them, and for a decent price." So far I haven't felt the urge to actually play the update. ...

Re: Squid Fighting Tips

Squid not flinging you around in shallow water may be an oversight Well they definitely will swing you around if you let them but they have a harder time doing so when in shallow water. They won't though. They only pull you in if you're on dry land or in a boat. If you are in the water they will ju...

Re: Squid Fighting Tips

Anyone else have tips fighting squids or protecting oneself from them? Get a really good helmet. When you absolutely have to fight squid do so while in the shallows or even while swimming, they won't throw you around and instead swim directly up to you to try and couple with your face. Back-pedalin...

Re: [spoilers] Mushroom farm designs

For a reliable 10 minute timer I set up n item decay to a T flip flop with a pulse limiter so it only pulses once every 10 minutes. It's only a repeater and a bit of redstone more expensive but it'll give you a lot more time to grow. this works for short input harvesting like piston-based farming l...

Re: Mobfarm platform design

I went with 3x3 platforms with a single block in the center to prevent spiders from spawning, one block spaces between platforms and a complete uninterrupted walk-around where mobs can spawn. The idea was to save on vinetraps and build a chicken-powered spider trap on a different occasion because sp...

Re: Hardcore Caste System

There are three castes: farmer blacksmith+butcher librarian+priest. It doesn't really matter which caste is above the other, as long as you see them as distinct. To start a "complete" village (provided you have enough diamonds) you'll need one Testificate from each caste; breeding a black...

Re: Can't figure out a low-tech item detector

There are several options really. None of them are completely efficient, but they do guarantee a steady generation of food for a minor cost. Most simple: dispense seed onto a pressure plate. When the chicken eats it, or the seed despawns the dispenser resets by producing another seed. Somewhat more ...

Re: Can't figure out a low-tech item detector

I hope I'm not spoiling too much, as figuring out how to make stuff work is possibly the most important part of the fun, but you can go a long way using decay timers. It's definitely not automated or as convenient but enables some interesting solutions.

Re: First Iron Tool: Pick or Hoe?

The last time I started a new world (which should be well over a year ago now) I opted to go for hoe first. The idea was that I could secure food and kick-start my hemp farm while gathering more materials for a pick. A factor may have been the access to two ravines which gave me a good supply of eas...
