Re: Can't figure out a low-tech item detector
Put a spider web in the block above the chickens. Shoot seeds so they fall through the spider web. The chickens will eat the seed if hungry. If they aren't, the seed will fall in the hopper. Collect the wasted seeds every now and then.

I watch quite a few of the posted videos. So just because viewers aren't commenting in this thread doesn't mean the videos aren't being watched.

Re: New Computer Build Help
There are two items that you should consider. The first is the 450W power supply. 450W is a little on the on the low end and it's better to spend an extra $10 now, than for it to fail and have to buy a bigger one anyway. The second is that adding a solid state drive will, by itself, give you a bigge...

Re: Factorio: A game all about automation
Agreed devak. I noticed, then confirmed on the wiki, that the aliens get significantly stronger when you kill one of the spawners. I thought that I would save myself some trouble and set up some turrets at a spawner near my base. I took them out, but about an hour later all of the other spawners nea...

Re: Factorio: A game all about automation
Oh man. My first game was similar. Six hours into the game I had still never been attacked. The next game, I reached a point where I saved the game, then the aliens attacked, and they destroyed me every time. I couldn't figure out a way to survive, so I made another game. Needless to say, a few game...

One way to find coal quickly when there isn't any nearby surface coal is to used shovels to dig on top of the first strata of stone. Shovels last much longer, and when you need light, you just break the block above you because you're so close to the surface.

Re: Help with a new computer.
You're looking for PCPartPicker . You should easily be able to keep it under $750. I'd recommend the lowest priced i5 quad-core Haswell that meets your performance criteria. The reason I choose Intel over AMD currently is due to the increased number of pipeline flushes, the longer length of each flu...

I have a railway that extends from under my base to the ocean just because I thought it would be cool, but I find it nearly useless because the portal spell is so cheap, yet so much more efficient. Have any of you actually found railways useful?

Re: Path of Exile - Thoughts?
I'm a fan of hack-and-slash ARPGs, and this might be one of my favourites to date, although I'm only ~10 hours into it. I love the skill gem system, the graphics (I loved Torchlight, but cannot stand the cartoony graphics), and most importantly, the price. This is pretty much the only genre of games...

Re: Mob Traps
My gaps are 3x3, because spiders rarely fall down 2x2 gaps. I always have the 3x3 gaps, because even if I use pillars to prevent spider spawns, I can remove the pillars to allow spiders to spawn again and they'll still fall down because my traps are large enough.

Re: Multiple End Dimensions Mod
I was agreeing with you mostly dude. :P I think that having a second end or region is a better idea than a re-spawning dragon in the original end to trash builds. Oops. I came off differently than I meant to sound. I meant my post to concur with yours and banish the thought of "wiping" th...

Re: Mob Traps
I've never really found spiders in my traps to be much of an issue, and I've never built to avoid them, so I'm not sure why people build traps to avoid them so often. It's not that spiders are issues. As you said, they are quite easy to design for. But as others have commented, by removing spiders ...

Re: Multiple End Dimensions Mod
Multiple end dimensions sounds like a disaster, the only reasonable appeasement that I can think of for your problem is to give each Player entity a value that determines if they have defeated the EnderDragon or not, if they haven't then a dragon will spawn when the player enters the end, only atta...

Re: Mob Traps
snip This is how I normally do mine, but I never put pillars, may I ask, why the pillars? Spiders require 3x3x1 (x by z by y) air blocks centered on the spawning block. The pillars prevent spiders from spawning. Keeping spiders from spawning has a number of advantages, such as higher throughput (si...

Re: Multiple End Dimensions Mod
What about just two end dimensions? When you enter the portal, if you've slain the dragon, you go to one of them. If you haven't, you go to the other one, where the dragon is always respawned after death. Everyone who hasn't slain the dragon would end up going to the same dimension, allowing for sha...

Re: A weird missing file on my computer (Ghost File?)
This is likely an NTFS permissions issue. As an administrator, take ownership of the file. Then, give yourself "full control" permission. Then delete the file.
