Just a story about making it back home.

So, I died the other day, and ended up respawning in a 'dead zone'. A place where another player (or two) had previously been and cleared out the area of animal life, except for some hungry wolves. I didn't just immediately drown myself, although I considered it. What I did was find about a half doz...

Re: Balance Difficulty vs. Tedium

Definitely if you have very low hunger and there are no animals nearby, it's not worth playing out, IMO. It actually is happening fairly often with hc spawn on my server now. If a player lives for a while in a new area and then dies before getting farming going, the next player that spawns there is ...

re: chests, dying, and building bases: I always, always, always build at spawn. I won't leave it unless there is literally no food and I am starving to death. You're going to die eventually, and when you die, you're going to need to be able to find your base again, and the only reliable way to do th...

Re: Getting REALLY Frustrated

If you're dying that much, you're simply playing it wrong. You need to be more cautious, carefully secure your entrances to your base, secure a renewable food supply, etc, etc. I've died maybe 4 or 5 times over the course of 4 days on my new server (Mostly from wolves and random creeper hits, but al...

Re: A public thank you (Warning, rambling)

I ran into a player on my server who had no idea that a compass pointed to spawn. He had been playing minecraft for years and had never made one. That's one of the great things about btw-- almost every block and item is worth making for something.

Re: Magic Wankery (Was: A Big Thanks)

I dunno, there was a time in the late 90s where I had pretty much every card released from beta up through the Masquerade cycle memorized, including rarity and approximate dollar value. The obsessiveness that goes along with being a teenage boy, I guess.

Server-side/admin mods that are compatible with BTW?

Are there any essential or at least worthwhile server-side mods that work with BTW? I have a pretty basic install, but I'd like to be able to, for example, check into what's going on on the server while I'm at work, other than looking at the console or chat log -- any dynamic map mods or anything li...

Re: Show us your builds!

My multiplayer server has been going on since Saturday with about 3-4 regular players. Our crowning achievements so far are: A packed earth road, a hemp farm with six(!) plants, and we finally got two chickens alive and back to base after 2 previous attempts ended in failure as we couldn't make it b...

Re: Possible Spoiler - Hardcore Darkness

I'm not sure if this behavior is related to hardcore darkness or just general squeamishness about night, but I've noticed that my players often just disconnect at night time so they don't starve to death. I wonder if there is some way to discourage that kind of behavior.

Re: Tales of Woe: how has a feature of BTW killed your steve

I wish I had been keeping logs, but I started a new server yesterday, less than 24 hours ago, and one of our players has died no less than 50 times. He's still plugging away at it, though, bless his heart. It's been almost an hour since his last death!

Re: New Release! (BTW V4.86)

I just installed a multiplayer server for about a dozen BTW newbies, and skimming through the chat from when I was gone was fairly amusing, as they starve to death, discover hostile wolves, that coordinates don't work, etc. I almost don't have to play to get my enjoyment out of it. People giving the...

I think conduit works. Definitely has a supernatural feel, but it's an old word. Would be better than conductor, from the same root.

Re: Request for name ideas for "Redstone Actuator"

So basically you're running into the problem of mind-body dualism here, where you're trying to connect the 'spiritual' world of redstone to the physical world of the body, so I'd suggest something like 'daemon', perhaps, to represent something that can bridge the two worlds (and also references unix...

Sorry if this has been asked before, but what are the best providers for hosting minecraft servers these days? I'll spend extra money for quality, if it makes a difference. I'll probably have about a dozen people on it at a time, at most.

Yeah, I didn't mean to say he should track all of that stuff, just that there are other considerations for range besides fuel.

Re: RTS Game Design Question: Upkeep to complex?

Fuel does reduce a given unit's range quite well but somehow it feels wrong for a space ship to use fuel while it is not accelerating or manoeuvring. A couple of things -- you need almost as much fuel to stop as you need to get going, and secondly, for long trips, let's imagine you need more people...

I can tell you that I probably wouldn't use tripwires even if you did redesign them. They have no good place. Yeah, that's the way I think I'm feeling too. I seem to be contemplating redesigning jungle temple traps more than the tripwires themselves, so that gives a pretty good indication of where ...
