In my experience, if you can work out the aesthetics first, it's probably the better idea.* In the end, as long as it's good enough, you're not exactly going to be working with the internals much after you've finished so it's easier to take pride in you work if you built it specifically to look good...

I think the OP would have accounted for Zombies if that were the case, given that this village is stated to be near his base. I've been given advice in the past to the point that you can in fact speed up the rate at which vines grow. Hunh, I can see some potential value in this: Folks have talked about baiting mobtraps with animals now that hostile mobs eat them and dangling chckens and cows from ropes as bait would be both space efficient and comical.
