Torches improve on the Crude Torch by harnessing the power of Netherrack to burn forever. They can be lit to create a Burning Torch by right-clicking it in the world on Fire, burning Campfires, Lava, lit Brick Ovens, smouldering Wood, other Torches, Crude Torches, and Candles, and placed in the world to provide light in the surrounding area.
Unlit and burning torches can be freely placed, picked up and replaced without loss, and can be attached to walls or the ground.

Fire Spread
In BTW, most sources of fire, including Torches, have to be placed carefully to prevent burning down your home. Fire sources will heat up some air blocks around and above them, making any flammable block within range catch fire.
The air block above the Torch (represented by the red block in the picture below), will make any adjacent flammable block (represented by the glass blocks) burn down. So in the picture bellow, you are only to place flammable blocks around the glass blocks :
Placing a non-flammable block just above the Torch will prevent any fire spread and guarantee that there's no accident.
Keep in Mind
- Flammable blocks directly above or directly adjacent to the space directly above the torch can catch fire. Avoid placing them on wooden walls!
- Candles improve on torches by not setting nearby flammable surfaces on fire.
- Burning Torches will be extinguished if your head is submerged in water, but they can be re-lit.
- Jack 'o' Lanterns are created using Candles.
