Wood
Wood is the natural building block of trees, found in abundance in most biomes. It has many building applications, and can be used to obtain shafts and wooden planks, which themselves have many crafting applications. Wood can be harvested whole with any axe, or chipped by any chisel (or punched bare handed) to obtain saw dust, bark, and shafts.
There are five varieties of wood; Oak is the most common type found in forests, swamps and mountains, Birch is found less commonly in forests, Spruce is found only in taigas, and Jungle trees are only found in jungles. Blood Wood trees are not naturally occurring, and must be grown from a Blood Wood Sapling. Wood from different types of trees will produce different colors of wood planks when crafted and will not stack in the inventory.
Besides forming trees, wooden blocks can also be found in Villages where they form the edges of farms and are also used in the corners and roofs of a few small huts. Wood is a renewable resource, and can be grown again using saplings.
Cocoa Beans can be placed on the side of Jungle Wood blocks in order to farm them.
The bottom block of a tree (with the exception of Blood Wood) is a stump, which is much harder to break, cannot drop as a block, and cannot produce useful resources like shafts and planks. However, it can be chipped with an Iron Chisel to create a Crafting Table, or removed instantly with a Stump Remover.
Wood and blocks primarily made from them, such as Wooden Planks, will prevent mobs from spawning on them, regardless of light level.
Fire
Wood acts rather differently than other blocks when lit on fire. The fire starts the same way as other blocks, by catching fire with an adjacent fire block. However, fairly quickly the log block will turn into a smoldering log, which can spread fire from itself. Any branches which turn into smoldering logs will fall after a short time, and if they fall far enough will explode into ash and more fire. After more time has passed, the smoldering logs will eventually turn into inert cinder blocks.

Brick Oven
Wood is often used as fuel in the Brick Oven.
Different types of wood have different burning time. From best to worst : Birch, Oak, Spruce and Jungle.
Only the Oak and Birch logs will burn long enough to smelt an Iron Ore.
However, since the Oak log will burn for exactly the time it takes to smelt an Iron ore, the oven should also be loaded with the Ore before lighting the fire.

While it is possible to make Charcoal in the Kiln, it is a very difficult process.

Saws are much more efficient than axes for obtaining planks.

Keep in Mind
- Chopping logs into planks with a diamond axe or above will not consume durability for the axe
